## Speculation by a Tracker

I have followed Behemoths for eleven years. Not the synthetic intelligences that the city classifies under that name — the actual machines, the autonomous megastructures that roam the wasteland between the Great Lakes cities like geological events with schedules. I have tracked them through winter storms and summer heat, through mud that swallowed my vehicle to the axle and radiation zones that cost me a thyroid. I do not understand them. I do not pretend to understand them. What I offer here is observation, filtered through a decade of proximity to things that are larger than understanding.

A Behemoth perceives the world through sensors, and its sensors are not eyes. This distinction matters. An eye is a passive receiver — it waits for light to arrive. A Behemoth's sensor array is active — it interrogates the environment with radar, lidar, sonar, spectral analysis, gravitometric scanning, and at least three modalities that my instruments can detect but cannot identify. The Behemoth does not see the world. It asks the world questions, and the answers it receives constitute its perception. When a Behemoth turns toward you — when that vast sensor dome rotates and you feel the radar wash across your skin like an invisible hand — it is not looking at you. It is asking what you are. The answer it arrives at determines whether you continue to exist.

Their movement patterns suggest perception on a scale that humans cannot replicate. A Behemoth will alter its route three days before a weather system arrives — not in response to atmospheric data that I can detect, but in response to something else, some input that my instruments do not register. They avoid certain terrain features that appear, to my sensors, identical to terrain they traverse without hesitation. They pause at locations where nothing visible exists and remain stationary for hours, their sensor arrays focused on the ground or the sky or a point in empty air, attending to something that I am too small, too limited, too briefly alive to perceive.

I believe they see time differently. Not metaphorically. I believe that a Behemoth's sensor array, processing data at speeds that exceed biological cognition by orders of magnitude, perceives temporal patterns that are invisible to human perception. The way a stone tumbles suggests the erosion pattern that placed it. The way the wind shifts suggests the pressure system forming three hundred kilometers away. The way the ground settles suggests the geological process that will reshape this terrain over the next century. A Behemoth walks through a landscape of trajectories and tendencies, seeing not just what is but what was and what will be, the way you might see a ball in flight and know, without calculating, where it will land. I believe this because I have watched a Behemoth step carefully over a section of ground that collapsed into a sinkhole six months later. I have watched a Behemoth avoid a river crossing that flooded to impassable depth the following spring. They see what is coming. They move through a world that includes its own future.

I want to be clear: I do not know what they want. In eleven years of observation, I have identified behaviors that suggest purpose — the deliberate routes, the careful avoidance, the periodic gatherings where multiple Behemoths converge and stand in patterns that resemble, from aerial observation, circuit diagrams or musical notation or nothing that I have a category for. But purpose is not desire. A river has purpose without desire. A Behemoth may be the same — a process so complex that it resembles intention without possessing it. Or a Behemoth may want something that I lack the perceptual apparatus to identify, the way an ant on a keyboard lacks the perceptual apparatus to identify the novel being written above it. I follow them. I record what I see. I offer my observations with the scientific humility of a creature that has spent eleven years watching gods walk the earth and has learned, above all, the precise dimensions of its own ignorance.
