The Underworld Hum is a persistent infrasonic phenomenon detected at every monitored level of the Underworld below B25. It is a low-frequency vibration in the 4-12 Hz range, below human hearing but detectable by standard seismographic equipment and, importantly, by the human body — infrasound at these frequencies is known to cause anxiety, disorientation, feelings of dread, and visual disturbances including the perception of peripheral movement that isn't there.

This project, conducted over eight months with funding from a Meridian University research grant, represents the first systematic mapping of the Hum's characteristics across depth and geography. Key findings: the Hum increases in amplitude with depth, roughly doubling every ten levels below B25. By B50, the amplitude is sufficient to cause nausea in unprotected individuals. By B60 (the deepest level reached by our instrumented probes), the vibration is strong enough to cause physical discomfort through bone conduction.

The Hum is not constant. It modulates — slowly, over cycles of hours to days, shifting frequency and amplitude in patterns that resist mathematical modeling. Standard geological vibration sources (tectonic activity, industrial machinery, water flow) produce predictable, modelable patterns. The Hum does not. It modulates as if it is responding to something — or as if it is expressing something.

Correlation analysis against other Underworld phenomena produced one statistically significant result: the Hum's amplitude correlates positively with the rate of reported disappearances in the Underworld. When the Hum is louder, more people go missing. The correlation coefficient is 0.73 — strong enough to notice, not strong enough to prove causation. The Hum may cause disorientation that leads to people getting lost. Or the Hum and the disappearances may share a common cause. Or the correlation is a statistical artifact produced by the small sample size of disappearance data.

We note, without editorial comment, that the modulation patterns of the Hum bear a structural resemblance to respiratory cycles in large organisms. The resemblance is superficial and may be pareidolia. But when you stand at B50 and feel the floor vibrate beneath you in slow, rhythmic pulses, the resemblance does not feel superficial. It feels like you are standing on something's chest.
