This document was recovered from a physical dead drop in the Circuit district. It was printed on paper — not transmitted digitally. The author is unknown. The analysis is precise enough to suggest someone with access to corponation-level systems data. It has been transcribed here exactly as found.

The document is titled simply: RETENTION. It opens with a single line: "This is not a conspiracy. It is worse than a conspiracy. It is an optimization." What follows is a clinical enumeration of every mechanism that prevents residents of the GLMZ from leaving — none of which were designed as barriers, all of which function as one.

Corponations need consumers. A consumer who leaves the GLMZ stops consuming. CorpSec tracks everyone within the zone. Leaving means becoming untracked. Untracked means suspicious. Suspicious means flagged. Your BCI operates on the GLMZ neural mesh — outside the mesh, your implant is inert metal in your skull. You are deaf, blind, and disconnected. Your Quanta balance is denominated in a currency that has no guaranteed exchange rate beyond the GLMZ boundary, if it is accepted at all. Your augmentations require maintenance from Lazarus-licensed clinics that do not exist outside the zone. Without maintenance, rejection begins within months. Your tier status — the number that determines your access to housing, employment, medical care, and education — is a record in a corporate database. It does not transfer. Leave the corponation and the record stays. You become statistically nonexistent. The Corridor to the east runs weekly. The ticket costs more than most Tier 1 residents earn in a month. The stories about the outside are inconsistent, frightening, and told exclusively by people who are never seen again.

The analyst's conclusion is three sentences: "Nobody locked the door. The door is open. But between you and the door is every system that keeps you alive, and every system that keeps you alive needs you to stay." A handwritten addendum, in different ink, appears at the bottom of the final page: "The prison is not built. It is accrued. Every convenience is a bar. Every service is a wall. The warden is nobody. Or did someone design it that way? That is the question nobody asks out loud. Not because it is forbidden. Because the answer might be worse than not knowing."

The document was found folded inside a hollowed-out copy of a 20th-century book titled "Manufacturing Consent." The book itself was printed on paper so old it crumbled when handled. The document inside was fresh. The dead drop has not been used again.

story hooks
  • A journalist begins tracing the analyst's identity through the specificity of the systems data cited. The data is accurate — verifiably so — which means the author had access to internal metrics from at least three corponations simultaneously. That narrows the field to approximately forty people. Thirty-seven of them are accounted for.
  • Someone begins distributing physical copies of the Retention document throughout the Shelf. Each copy is hand-printed. The distribution network is untraceable because it uses no digital communication. The document is becoming a manifesto. The corponations have not responded, which is itself a response.
