The sound travels through the building before the water does — a groan in the pipes, a hammering in the walls, and then the specific hiss of a faucet that hasn't flowed in twelve hours releasing its first cloudy, mineral-tasting stream. You fill everything. The cooking pot. The drinking bottles. The basin that serves as both sink and bathtub. Some workers share food — a container of rice and synth-protein prepared at home, divided among three or four people, each contributing a component. The shared meal is more nourishing than the paste. 6:00 PM — Home. The evening water cycle runs from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, and the first task is refilling everything that was emptied in the morning. A beach. A forest. A quiet room with a door that locks. 11:30 PM — Sleep, or the attempt. The building breathes around you — plumbing, ventilation, the specific creak of polymer walls contracting in the night cold. Someone in the unit above is still awake, their BCI audio bleeding through the floor as a muffled rhythm. The mattress sags where your augmented arm presses.
