When a patient loses an organic limb, they may experience phantom limb sensation — the brain continues to receive signals from neural pathways that no longer terminate in flesh. This is well-documented and has been understood for centuries.

SNT has created a new variant of this phenomenon that is, in many ways, more devastating.

When a patient has a cybernetic implant removed — whether through medical necessity, SNR exposure, or violent trauma — the SNT bonding layer is destroyed or excised along with the implant. The neural bridges that the SNT formed between the patient's nervous system and the implant are severed. The brain, which had fully integrated the implant as part of its body schema, receives no signal where it expects one.

The result is phantom chrome syndrome (PCS): the persistent sensation of a cybernetic implant that is no longer present.

PCS is qualitatively different from traditional phantom limb syndrome in three ways:

1. SPECIFICITY: Patients do not merely feel a vague presence. They feel the specific implant. A patient who lost a Cortex Dynamics C-7 cybernetic arm reports feeling the specific weight distribution, the specific servo feedback, the specific haptic texture of that arm's synthetic skin. The brain remembers the implant in extraordinary detail.

2. FUNCTIONALITY: Patients attempt to use the absent implant. A patient with phantom chrome where a retinal HUD was installed will involuntarily try to check notifications, zoom their vision, or activate low-light mode. The brain sends motor commands to hardware that no longer exists.

3. GRIEF RESPONSE: Patients consistently describe PCS as grief, not merely discomfort. The neural integration provided by SNT was deep enough that the implant became part of the patient's identity. Its loss is experienced not as losing a tool but as losing a part of the self. Depression, identity crisis, and suicidal ideation are significantly more common in PCS patients than in traditional amputation patients.

Treatment is limited. Reimplantation resolves symptoms immediately but is not always medically or financially possible. Pharmacological management of phantom sensations is partially effective. Cognitive behavioral therapy helps patients adapt. Nothing fully replaces what was lost.

The cruelest application of this knowledge is deliberate. SNR — Synthetic Necrotic Reversion — is a compound that dissolves the SNT bonding layer, forcibly separating implants from the body. It is used as a weapon, a torture instrument, and a tool of punishment. The perpetrators understand exactly what they are inflicting: not just physical pain, but the neurological murder of a part of someone's identity.
