The Free Peoples Republic of Idaho declared independence from all corporate sovereignty in 2203 and has spent the subsequent two decades expanding. Current intelligence — assembled primarily from intercepted radio traffic and the accounts of traders who operate along the Republic's eastern border — indicates that Idaho has annexed western Montana and significant portions of Wyoming, establishing what it calls the Mountain Corridor, a contiguous territory running from the Canadian border south to approximately the 42nd parallel.

The Republic operates under a model that GLMZ analysts describe as "agrarian techno-libertarianism." It rejects corporate sovereignty, BCI implantation is voluntary (and reportedly uncommon), and the Quanta currency is not recognized — the Republic operates on a combination of barter, labor credit, and a physical currency minted from locally-smelted copper called the "Stone." Its military is a citizen militia estimated at 40,000-60,000 personnel, lightly augmented but heavily armed with a mix of pre-collapse weapons and locally manufactured firearms. The Republic has no known automata and appears to regard autonomous machines with something between suspicion and religious hostility.

What makes the Republic strategically significant is not its military capacity — which is modest by corponation standards — but its existence as proof that an alternative is possible. A functioning society of approximately 800,000 people that operates without BCIs, without corporate governance, and without Quanta. Travelers who have visited (and this is the critical caveat — travelers who claim to have visited, because as with all outside territories, these accounts cannot be independently verified) describe a society that is harder, slower, and poorer than life in the GLMZ, but also — and they struggle to articulate this — more coherent. The word "real" comes up frequently. As in: "Everything there felt real."

The corponations do not officially acknowledge the Republic's existence. Arcturus Defense Solutions maintains a monitoring presence along the GLMZ's western signal boundary but has not conducted operations into Republic territory. The prevailing theory within GLMZ intelligence circles is that the Republic is tolerated because it is distant, resource-poor, and serves as a useful pressure valve — dissidents who might otherwise cause problems in the GLMZ can be quietly encouraged to "go west." Whether any of them arrive is, as always, unverified.

story hooks
  • A Republic trader appears at the Old Harbor market with goods that shouldn't exist — electronics manufactured without corporate licensing, food grown in soil without Ringo seed stock. She's willing to talk about Idaho. She says the mountains are beautiful. She says the stars are right there. She'll be gone by morning.
  • An Arcturus intelligence officer is quietly assembling a file on GLMZ residents who have expressed interest in emigrating to the Republic. The file is growing. The officer's superiors have not asked for the file. He's building it on his own initiative. He hasn't decided what to do with it yet.
