Tower 7 in the Laceworks is a 40-story mixed-use building constructed in 2178. It has 40 floors. The architectural plans show 40 floors. The structural engineering documents describe 40 floors. The elevator system services 40 floors. But the elevator panel has 41 buttons, and the 23rd floor does not exist.

The button is there. It is labeled "23." It is between "22" and "24," which is where one would expect it. Pressing the button does nothing — the elevator does not move, no indicator light activates, no error is logged. The elevator travels from 22 to 24 without pause, without a gap in the shaft, and without the acceleration profile that would indicate a skipped floor. The distance between the 22nd and 24th floors is exactly the distance that should exist between any two consecutive floors. There is no space for a 23rd floor. And yet.

The stairwell tells a different story. Between the 22nd and 24th floor landings, there is a door. It is a standard fire door, labeled "23," with a functioning handle. The handle turns. The latch releases. The door opens onto a blank wall. Solid concrete, smooth, unpainted, with no indication that there was ever an opening behind it. The concrete is continuous with the building's structural core — core samples confirm it is original construction material, poured in 2178, undisturbed.

Maintenance worker Ekundayo Strand-Petrov claims to have exited the elevator on the 23rd floor on November 4th, 2212. He states that he pressed the 23 button as he did every day — out of habit, not expectation — and the elevator stopped. The doors opened onto a hallway. He stepped out. The hallway was long, featureless, and lit by an even, sourceless light. It had no end. He could see the hallway extending in both directions to a vanishing point. There were no doors, no intersections, no features of any kind. He re-entered the elevator. The doors closed. He pressed 22 and arrived at the 22nd floor. He has pressed 23 every day since. The elevator has never stopped there again.
