The Fauna of GLMZ
# The Fauna of GLMZ

## A Comprehensive Field Guide to Adapted Urban Wildlife

The animals of GLMZ are not the animals that were here before. Two centuries of electromagnetic saturation, geneware contamination, atmospheric processing, and the simple Darwinian pressure of surviving alongside twelve million humans and their machines have produced a fauna that a 21st-century ecologist would recognize in outline and recoil from in detail. The city's wildlife has adapted not just to urbanization but to augmentation — to a built environment so thoroughly permeated by technology that the boundary between natural and artificial habitat has dissolved. What remains is neither natural nor artificial. It is something else. It is GLMZ.

The rats are the most visible adaptation. GLMZ's brown rat population — estimated at 40 million, or roughly three rats per human — has been exposed to low-level geneware contamination from pharmaceutical runoff, medical waste, and the specific chemical ecology of a city whose residents are 78% augmented. The contamination has not produced monsters. It has produced efficiency. Shelf rats are 15% larger than the historical baseline, with denser bone structure, enhanced low-light vision, and a metabolic rate that allows them to process synthetic food waste that would have been indigestible to their ancestors. Their social behavior has complexified — colonies in the deeper Shelf levels display coordinated foraging strategies that exceed the behavioral complexity documented in any pre-contamination rat population. They are not smarter, exactly. They are more organized. The distinction is meaningful to biologists and irrelevant to the Shelf residents who share their walls with them.

The pigeons navigate by BCI signal — this is documented elsewhere — but their physical adaptations are equally remarkable. GLMZ pigeons have developed a melanin variation in their plumage that absorbs electromagnetic radiation in the 2.4 GHz band, the primary frequency of local BCI communications. The feathers act as passive antennas, absorbing and re-radiating BCI signals in patterns that, when measured, correspond to the pigeons' navigational decisions. The birds are wearing the network. Their feathers are tuned to the city's communication infrastructure the way their ancestors' magnetite crystals were tuned to the Earth's magnetic field. Evolution has simply updated the hardware.

The cats are the strangest. Feral cats in the Old Harbor district and the Underworld access tunnels have developed bioluminescence — a faint, blue-green glow visible in low-light conditions, emanating from modified cells in the skin of the ears, paws, and tail tip. The bioluminescence is a response to geneware-contaminated prey — the rats and insects that the cats consume carry trace quantities of bioluminescent compounds from the Underworld's fungal ecosystem, and the cats' digestive systems have evolved to sequester rather than excrete these compounds. The glow serves no apparent survival function. It makes the cats more visible to predators and prey alike. But in the lightless tunnels of the Underworld, the blue-green glow of a feral cat is one of the most beautiful things you will ever see, and beauty, in evolutionary terms, has its own logic.

The cockroaches deserve their own entry but will receive only a note: they are unchanged. GLMZ's cockroach population is, genetically and behaviorally, indistinguishable from the cockroach population of 2024. Two centuries of technological revolution, and the cockroaches have not needed to adapt. They were already perfect. The symbiotic moss is newer — a species of bryophyte that has colonized the exterior of power conduits throughout the Grind and the Shelf, drawing nutrients from the conduits' electromagnetic field through a process that no botanist has been able to fully describe. The moss glows faintly in infrared, which means it is invisible to the naked eye but visible to anyone with an augmented visual spectrum. Walk through the Grind with chromatic-enhanced eyes and the power conduits are lined with luminous green fur. Walk through without augmentation and they are bare. The city has a secret garden. You need the right eyes to see it.
