## How the World Changes When Weather Is Coming

Two to four hours before a major storm system arrives, the lake's surface color shifts from its usual gray-blue to a specific, unmistakable green — a desaturated jade that experienced waterfront residents read like a warning placard. The color change is caused by the storm's advance pressure wave interacting with the lake's surface biology, pushing algae and suspended particulates toward the surface where they tint the water. The science is understood. The visceral response is not scientific — it is ancient, mammalian, the part of the brain that predates language looking at a horizon that has changed color and knowing that something is coming.

The Behemoths in the wasteland know before the lake changes color. Trackers who monitor the autonomous megastructures have documented a consistent pattern: twelve to eighteen hours before a major weather event, the Behemoths alter their behavior. Their routes shift, avoiding low-lying terrain and converging on elevated positions. One tracker described watching a Behemoth — a machine the size of a city block — turn to face an approaching supercell the way a person turns to face an old acquaintance. The animals know. They have always known. The difference is that in 2200, some of them are augmented enough that the knowing registers on instruments.

In the city itself, the hours before a storm produce a specific human choreography. Rooftop gardens are covered with polymer sheeting secured by whatever is heavy enough to resist wind. Exterior-facing windows — the ones that still open, in the older Shelf buildings that predate sealed climate control — are closed and reinforced with scavenged materials. The specific green that means a supercell has its own name in the Shelf.
