Abstract: The tunnels of the Underworld below depth 8 are approximately 10 degrees Celsius warmer than geological models predict. This paper documents our failure to explain why. We present this failure not as a preliminary finding pending further research, but as a definitive acknowledgment that the warmth of the deep Underworld cannot be accounted for by any known geological, mechanical, or biological process. We have looked. It is not there.

The expected temperature at Underworld depth 12 — approximately 180 meters below the surface — is 14.2 degrees Celsius, based on the regional geothermal gradient of 25-30°C per kilometer and the mean annual surface temperature. The measured temperature is 24.1 degrees Celsius. This 9.9-degree deviation is not localized to a single tunnel or chamber. It is uniform across the entirety of mapped depth 12, spanning an area of approximately 4 square kilometers. The warmth is everywhere. It is in the stone, the air, and the water that seeps through cracks in the tunnel walls. The deep Underworld is warm the way a living body is warm: uniformly, persistently, and without an obvious furnace.

We have tested for geothermal anomalies. There are none. The bedrock beneath GLMZ is Silurian dolomite and limestone, thermally unremarkable, with no volcanic history and no connection to active geothermal systems. We have tested for anthropogenic heat sources — industrial equipment, server farms, heat from the city above. The contribution of anthropogenic sources accounts for 0.4 degrees of the deviation. We have tested for exothermic chemical reactions in the rock or groundwater. There are none of sufficient magnitude. We have tested for radioactive decay in the surrounding geology. It is within normal parameters for the region.

The warmth has been present since the first deep tunnels were excavated in the 2140s. It has not increased or decreased in the sixty years of records we have examined. It is stable. It is comfortable. Several Underworld residents have told us, without prompting, that the deep tunnels feel "alive." We are geologists. We do not use words like "alive" to describe tunnels. But we have measured the warmth with every instrument available to us, we have eliminated every source we know how to look for, and we are left with a set of tunnels that are warm for no reason. The title of this paper is not ironic. It is an accurate description of our findings.
