The first one came ashore at Pier 19 in the lower Shelf during the September tides. Approximately 2,400 kilograms of biological material, pale and fibrous, smelling faintly of ozone and copper. Waterfront cleanup assumed it was a decomposed lake organism — sturgeon, possibly, or a colony of invasive jellyfish compacted by current. They tagged it for removal. By morning there were three more.

DNA sequencing returned results that the lab initially attributed to contamination. The samples contained base pairs that do not appear in any terrestrial organism. Not novel combinations of known nucleotides — novel nucleotides entirely. Adenine, guanine, cytosine, thymine, and two additional bases that the sequencer flagged as errors until they appeared in every sample from every mass. The lab director, Dr. Yuki Okonkwo-Chen, ran the analysis fourteen times. She has formally requested that her equipment be inspected for malfunction. It has been inspected. It is not malfunctioning.

The masses continue to wash ashore at a rate of roughly one per week. They do not decompose at any measurable rate. They are not alive by any standard biological definition, but tissue samples placed in growth medium exhibit coordinated cellular behavior that resembles, but is not, mitosis. The cells divide into structures that serve no identifiable biological function. The masses are warm to the touch regardless of ambient temperature. Their internal temperature is a constant 33.7 degrees Celsius.

We have seventeen of them now, stored in a repurposed cold dock on the lower waterfront. They are growing. Not individually — we measure them daily and they remain the same size. But their combined mass has increased by 11% since collection began. The scale is calibrated. The dock is sealed. Nothing is being added.
