The phenomenon was first reported by maintenance crews working in Tunnel Section 22-B of the mid-level Underworld. During a routine water leak repair, a worker sprayed a section of tunnel wall with water and saw images form on the wet concrete surface. Not stains. Not pareidolia. Images. Clear, detailed, photographic-quality images of events.

The first image showed two people arguing in the tunnel — a man and a woman, rendered in grayscale on the wet concrete with the fidelity of a high-resolution photograph. The maintenance crew recognized the location as the same section of tunnel they were standing in. They did not recognize the people. Security footage from the tunnel's cameras was reviewed. Six weeks prior, two residents of the Underworld — later identified as tenants in adjacent sub-level dwellings — had argued in that exact location. The image on the concrete matched the security footage frame for frame. The concrete had recorded the event.

Since that discovery, we have systematically wetted tunnel walls across a 2-kilometer survey area. Approximately 15% of concrete surfaces produce images when wet. The images depict events that occurred in proximity to the wall — conversations, maintenance work, people walking, accidents. The images are temporally jumbled — a wall might display an event from last week adjacent to an event from three years ago. The images fade as the concrete dries, typically within 20 minutes. They are not projections, not chemical reactions, not biological growth. The concrete itself contains the images. Cross-section analysis shows that the pigment variation extends 2 to 3 millimeters into the concrete matrix. The images are in the material.

The images are accurate. In every case we have been able to verify — 34 of 41 images cross-referenced against security footage or witness testimony — the concrete's record matches the actual event. We have found images dating back at least 15 years based on identifiable individuals and clothing styles. The concrete remembers everything that happens near it. It has been watching, and when you add water, it shows you what it saw.
