Abstract: This report describes eight objects recovered from three sealed chambers in the Underworld at depths ranging from 6 to 10, during expansion excavations conducted between 2197 and 2199. The chambers were sealed — not by human construction, but by geological processes. The surrounding rock is undisturbed limestone dating to the Silurian period, approximately 430 million years old. The chambers are natural voids. The objects inside them are not natural. They are also not made of anything we can identify.

Object UW-1 is a rod, approximately 30 centimeters in length and 2 centimeters in diameter, perfectly cylindrical with hemispherical end caps. Its surface is smooth to a tolerance that exceeds our best machining capabilities. It is made of a material that X-ray diffraction cannot characterize: the diffraction pattern does not match any known crystalline structure, and the material does not appear to be amorphous. It is something between crystalline and amorphous that our current materials science does not have a category for. The rod weighs 847 grams, giving it a density of approximately 9.0 g/cm³ — close to bismuth, but it is not bismuth. It is not any element. Mass spectrometry returns results that do not correspond to any position on the periodic table.

Objects UW-3 through UW-6 were recovered from the same chamber and appear to be components of a larger assembly, though we cannot determine how they fit together or what the assembly would do. They are made of different materials — each equally unidentifiable — and they show wear patterns consistent with use. Something used these objects. Something handled them enough to wear smooth the places where hands — or whatever held them — would grip.

I want to be explicit about what we are saying: these objects are made of materials that do not exist in our chemistry. They were found in sealed natural voids in 430-million-year-old rock. They show signs of manufacture and use. Every possible explanation for their presence requires accepting something that our current understanding of the world does not allow. We are publishing this preliminary report because the objects exist regardless of whether we can explain them, and because four members of my lab have independently reported the same feeling when handling them — a sensation they describe as "recognition," as if the objects know they are being held. I include this subjective observation not because it is scientific, but because ignoring it feels dishonest.
