On November 5, 2217, a road maintenance crew working on County Road 450 in rural Indiana — approximately 40 kilometers south of the Gary industrial perimeter — reported a set of tire tracks exhibiting properties that, upon investigation, proved to be genuinely inexplicable. The tracks ran along the road surface for approximately 1.3 kilometers. They were consistent in depth, width, and tread pattern with a mid-weight ground vehicle, likely a utility transport. They were also discontinuous.
The tire tracks appeared in segments of exactly 4.7 meters, separated by gaps of exactly 4.7 meters, for the entire 1.3-kilometer stretch. Not approximately 4.7 meters — exactly, to within the measurement precision of the survey equipment used (plus or minus 2 millimeters). The regularity was arithmetic: the pattern did not vary by a single measurable increment over nearly three hundred repetitions. No vehicle could produce this pattern through any known mechanical means. The impressions were not stamped — they showed the directional striations consistent with a rolling tire under load, including slight lateral deformation on the two gentle curves in the road.
The asphalt between the impressions was undisturbed. Not just untracked — undisturbed. The road surface in the gaps showed no evidence of tire contact, weight transfer, or any physical interaction with a vehicle. It was as though the vehicle had existed at each 4.7-meter segment, produced a normal tire impression, and then ceased to exist for the next 4.7 meters before reappearing to produce the next impression. The tread pattern does not match any vehicle registered in the regional database, or in the national database, or in any database that the investigating team was able to access.
The tracks have appeared three times since the initial discovery — once in 2218, once in 2220, and once in 2223. Each time, they appear after rainfall, on the same stretch of road, in the same pattern, with the same 4.7-meter spacing. Each time, they appear fresh. The road surface between appearances shows normal weathering. No monitoring equipment has captured the tracks being made — they are simply present after rain, as though the rain itself had revealed them, or as though whatever makes them only travels in the rain.
