This paper traces the cascade of failures that transformed the lakes from a living ecosystem into an industrial resource.

The collapse was not sudden. It was the culmination of two centuries of incremental degradation accelerated by three catastrophic events. First: the 2054 algae bloom, triggered by agricultural runoff and rising water temperatures, which consumed dissolved oxygen across 40% of Lake Erie's surface area and killed an estimated 80% of the lake's fish population in a single season.
