The mechanism was found in the Canadian border dead zone, embedded in the remains of a pre-collapse customs station approximately 15 kilometers west of the former Port Huron crossing. The station has been abandoned since 2094. The mechanism has not.

It is a clock. A physical, mechanical clock with a face, hands, and a visible escapement. The face is 30 centimeters in diameter, made of a white material that is neither ceramic nor metal — it resists identification by every non-destructive method we have employed. The numerals are standard Arabic, 1 through 12, but there are 13 of them, distributed evenly around the face. The clock has three hands: hour, minute, and a third hand that completes a revolution every 47 minutes. The time displayed does not correspond to any timezone on Earth. It does not correspond to any known astronomical reference frame.

The clock gains exactly 11 minutes per day relative to UTC. This drift is precise to the millisecond. It has been precise to the millisecond for the entire fourteen-month monitoring period. A mechanical clock that gains 11 minutes per day should show cumulative error — variations in temperature, humidity, and gravity should produce fluctuations. This clock does not fluctuate. It is more accurate to its own timekeeping standard than any atomic clock is to UTC. It is simply keeping time for a day that is 11 minutes longer than ours.

We cannot identify the power source. The escapement moves. The hands move. There is no winding mechanism, no spring, no battery, no power input. The mechanism operates with zero detectable energy input. It has been doing so for at least the 130 years since the customs station was abandoned, based on dust accumulation on the housing. Given the mechanism's construction — which shows no wear whatsoever — it has likely been operating much longer.

I have set a synchronized UTC clock beside it. Every day, it falls 11 minutes further behind. Or we fall 11 minutes further behind. I am no longer certain which frame of reference is drifting.
