MERIDIAN 88 — Ferrogate Transit Corporation has announced the elimination of six cross-tier transit routes effective April 1, citing a 15% decline in ridership over the past fiscal year. The cuts will primarily affect routes connecting Tier 1 and Tier 2 residential areas with Tier 3 commercial districts — routes used disproportionately by lower-tier workers commuting to service-sector jobs in the Mids.

Ferrogate CEO Anders Mbeki-Johansson presented the cuts as 'a responsible alignment of service capacity with market demand,' a characterization that riders and community advocates have disputed. The ridership decline, they argue, is itself a consequence of Ferrogate's previous round of service cuts in 2198, which increased wait times and reduced operating hours on the same routes now being eliminated. 'You made the service worse, fewer people used it, and now you're cutting it because fewer people use it,' said Shelf Community Board representative Kofi Tanaka-Osei. 'This is not a market correction. This is a self-fulfilling prophecy.'

The affected routes serve an estimated 12,000 daily riders. Alternative transit options include the Spine vertical transit system, which is already operating at capacity during peak hours, and unlicensed private shuttles that charge Φ15-25 per trip — affordable for Tier 3 residents, ruinous for Tier 1 workers earning Φ40-60 per day.

Ferrogate's announcement coincides with the corporation's filing for a municipal subsidy to expand its Tier 4-5 express service, which serves approximately 3,000 daily riders. The subsidy request has been endorsed by four of seven Municipal Council members.
