The lights appear every night. They have appeared every night for as long as anyone has maintained continuous observation of the corridor between GLMZ and the Gary Exclusion Zone — a minimum of 90 years based on the earliest Perimeter Observation logs. They appear after full dark, between 21:00 and 23:00, and persist until dawn. They are visible to the naked eye from observation stations at distances up to 30 kilometers.

They are spherical, approximately 1 to 3 meters in diameter, and emit light across a spectrum that shifts over time — amber to blue to white to green and back. They move at altitudes between 5 and 200 meters, at speeds ranging from stationary to approximately 80 km/h. They split. A single light will divide into two, three, or seven smaller lights that move independently before merging back into one. They merge. Two lights of different colors will combine into a single light of a third color that is not an additive product of the first two. They respond to observation — when tracked by targeting radar, they accelerate. When observed through telescopic optics, they hold position. When approached by ground vehicle, they retreat at a speed precisely matching the vehicle's approach speed.

They are not plasma. They are not ball lightning. They are not bioluminescence. They are not swamp gas, vehicle headlights, refracted starlight, or military flares. They have been investigated by seventeen research teams over five decades. No team has produced an explanation. Three teams have produced data that contradicts their own hypotheses so thoroughly that they withdrew their findings.

The lights predate every structure in the corridor. They predate the cities they appear between. Indigenous oral histories reference them. Colonial survey maps mark them. They are older than us. They are not interested in us. They are not uninterested either. They are doing something out there in the dead land, every night, and they have been doing it for a very long time.
