Routine water quality analysis at Vossen Utilities Treatment Plant 7 identified a chemical compound in the municipal water supply that should not exist. The compound — provisionally designated VU-7-Alpha — is a complex organic molecule with a recursive molecular structure: its component parts are smaller versions of itself, nested to at least four levels of self-similarity. This fractal architecture has never been observed in any natural or synthetic chemical compound.

VU-7-Alpha is present in trace amounts — approximately 0.003 parts per billion — in water sourced from the deep aquifer that feeds Treatment Plant 7. The deep aquifer draws from geological formations approximately 800 meters below GLMZ, well below the Underworld's lowest charted levels. Standard filtration and chemical treatment processes do not remove VU-7-Alpha because its molecular structure does not match any compound in the filtration system's targeting database.

Toxicology testing on VU-7-Alpha has produced contradictory results. In vitro tests on human cell cultures show no cytotoxic effect. Animal testing (conducted off-site due to ethical review requirements) showed no adverse health effects in standard 90-day exposure protocols. However, neural tissue samples exposed to VU-7-Alpha in concentrations 100 times the detected level showed a 340% increase in spontaneous synaptic activity — neurons firing without stimulus, in complex synchronized patterns that resemble, but do not match, known brain wave signatures.

The source of VU-7-Alpha is unknown. It is not present in lake water, surface runoff, or any industrial effluent stream monitored by Vossen. It appears to originate in the deep aquifer itself — either produced by geological processes not currently understood, or introduced by something at a depth that GLMZ's infrastructure does not reach. The compound has been present in every sample taken since monitoring began in 2195. Whether it was present before that is unknown because nobody was looking for it.

VU-7-Alpha is currently in the drinking water of approximately 2.3 million Shelf District residents served by Treatment Plant 7. The concentration is far below any established safety threshold. But no safety threshold exists for a compound that has never been cataloged, that no one can explain, and that makes neurons fire in patterns that look like thinking.
