## Jakarta Was the Warning

The world should have paid attention to Jakarta.

By 2024, the capital of the fourth most populous nation on Earth was sinking at a rate of up to 25 centimeters per year in its northern districts. Not from sea-level rise — though that was happening too — but from groundwater extraction. Thirteen million people pumping water from beneath their own feet, because the municipal water system served less than half the population, and the alternative to pumping was not having water. The land subsided. The sea advanced. The government announced a new capital, Nusantara, on the island of Borneo. The announcement was treated by international media as an interesting policy story. It should have been treated as a prophecy.

Jakarta did not die quickly. It died the way all great coastal cities in the climate era died: by stages, each stage normalized before the next one arrived. The flooding that closed the northern business district for three months in 2037 was called unprecedented. The flooding that closed it for six months in 2042 was called the new normal. The permanent inundation of North Jakarta in 2051 was called inevitable. But Jakarta was just the prologue. Indonesia was 17,508 islands, and the ocean was coming for all of them.

## The Java Evacuation

Java — 129 million people on an island slightly smaller than England — was the most densely populated large island on Earth. It was also a geological time bomb. The volcanic arc that gave Java its fertile soil also gave it Merapi, Semeru, Kelud, and dozens of other active volcanoes. The tectonic zone that shaped the island generated earthquakes and tsunamis with a regularity that Javanese civilization had absorbed for millennia. Java's northern coast — the flat, low-lying strip where most of the island's industry and port infrastructure was concentrated — experienced progressive inundation through the 2060s and 2070s. Semarang, already sinking from groundwater extraction (the Jakarta pattern repeated), lost its port district by 2068. Surabaya, Java's second city, spent Φ-equivalent billions on seawall construction that delayed the inevitable by perhaps twenty years.

The Indonesian government's internal projections, leaked in 2072, estimated that Java would need to relocate 40 million people by 2100. The actual number was closer to 55 million. The Java Evacuation — a term that encompasses two decades of managed and unmanaged displacement between 2070 and 2095 — was the largest single-island population movement in recorded history. It dwarfed the Partition of India. It exceeded the entire population of most nations.

Some evacuees went to Kalimantan, where the new capital Nusantara had been built but never achieved the scale needed to absorb millions. Some went to Sulawesi, to Papua, to the outer islands — but these islands had their own populations, their own resource constraints, and their own flooding problems. The international diaspora absorbed the rest.

## The Manufacturing Pipeline

Indonesian emigration to the United States had been modest compared to other Southeast Asian populations. There was no equivalent of the Vietnamese post-war diaspora or the Filipino healthcare worker pipeline. Indonesian-Americans in 2024 numbered roughly 100,000 nationwide — a tiny community relative to Indonesia's enormous population.

What brought Indonesians to the GLMZ in significant numbers was not an existing community but an economic demand. Indonesia's manufacturing sector — textiles, electronics assembly, automotive components, processed commodities — had made the nation the world's sixteenth-largest economy before the displacement. ## Muslim Community Building

Indonesia was the world's largest Muslim-majority nation — 230 million Muslims in a population of 270 million. The Indonesian practice of Islam was distinctive: syncretic, tolerant of local tradition, influenced by centuries of Hindu-Buddhist heritage, and generally resistant to the puritanical strains that characterized Middle Eastern Salafism. Javanese Islam in particular incorporated elements of mysticism, ancestor veneration, and artistic expression that orthodox scholars in other traditions viewed with suspicion.

This form of Islam traveled to the GLMZ with the diaspora, and it found an unexpected niche. The GLMZ's existing Muslim population — drawn from African, South Asian, Arab, and Balkan heritage — was diverse but lacked a single institutional anchor. The Indonesian community, arriving in concentrated numbers with a tradition of mosque-building and communal organization, provided one.

The Masjid Nusantara in The Laceworks — named after the failed capital — was established in 2089 in a converted manufacturing bay. It has been expanded four times and is now the largest mosque in the GLMZ, serving not only the Indonesian community but Muslims of every heritage in the surrounding districts. The mosque's architectural style — incorporating Javanese pendopo open-pavilion design elements — is distinctive in a megacity where most religious architecture defaults to utilitarian boxes. Its Friday prayers draw 4,000 worshippers. Its Ramadan iftars feed 10,000.

The mosque also serves as the community's primary social services hub, operating food distribution, job placement, language classes, and the informal dispute resolution system (musyawarah, consensus-based deliberation) that Indonesian communities have used for centuries. This dual function — spiritual center and social infrastructure — makes Masjid Nusantara one of the most important non-corporate institutions in The Laceworks.

## Cultural Preservation in 2226

Indonesian cultural preservation in the GLMZ operates differently from communities with a single dominant ethnic identity. Indonesia was itself a multicultural project — 300 ethnic groups, 700 languages, unified by a national language (Bahasa Indonesia) that was nobody's mother tongue and everybody's shared medium. This experience of maintaining unity across diversity translated surprisingly well to the GLMZ context.

Batik — the textile art that UNESCO recognized as Indonesian cultural heritage in 2009 — persists in the GLMZ as both a cultural practice and a small-scale industry. Indonesian-heritage textile workers in The Laceworks produce batik using methods that are recognizably traditional (wax-resist dyeing, hand-drawn patterns) adapted to GLMZ materials and markets. Batik patterns appear on clothing throughout the megacity, sometimes recognized as Indonesian, sometimes simply perceived as beautiful.

Gamelan music — the bronze percussion ensemble tradition of Java and Bali — maintains a dedicated following in the GLMZ. A community gamelan orchestra performs monthly at Masjid Nusantara's cultural center, and gamelan workshops attract participants from across the megacity, drawn by a sonic palette that is unlike anything else in the GLMZ's music scene. The instruments themselves — hand-forged bronze keys and gongs — are among the most valuable cultural artifacts the community possesses, some of them carried from Java during the evacuation.

Bahasa Indonesia, like Vietnamese, benefits from being linguistically distinctive enough to resist absorption into the GLMZ's dominant language blend. The language persists in family settings, in mosque services, and in the Indonesian-language media networks that serve the community. It has also contributed vocabulary to GLMZ street slang — gotong-royong (mutual cooperation) and musyawarah (consensus) are used by Laceworks residents of every heritage when describing community decision-making.

## District Concentration

Indonesian heritage is concentrated in The Laceworks and The Shelf, reflecting the community's arrival as manufacturing workers and its subsequent expansion into the broader working-class economy.

The Laceworks is the community's heartland. The district's manufacturing operations employ Indonesian-heritage workers at every level, from floor operators to shift managers to the handful of Indonesian-owned mid-tier fabrication companies that have grown from single-family workshops into significant employers. The residential blocks surrounding Masjid Nusantara constitute the densest concentration of Indonesian heritage in the GLMZ — a neighborhood where Bahasa Indonesia is heard on the street, where warung (food stalls) sell nasi goreng and soto ayam at prices The Shelf's food corridor can't match, and where the call to prayer from the mosque's speakers marks the rhythm of the day.

In The Shelf, Indonesian-heritage residents are more dispersed, integrated into the district's general working-class population. The community's presence here is less visible but no less real — Indonesian food culture, particularly the street food tradition of mobile vendors selling satay, bakso, and martabak, has become a fixture of The Shelf's informal economy.

## Two Hundred Years of Intermarriage

Indonesian intermarriage patterns in the GLMZ were shaped by the community's internal diversity. Javanese marrying Sundanese, Batak marrying Minangkabau — these were already cross-cultural unions by Indonesian standards, even if the GLMZ couldn't perceive the difference. The community was accustomed to navigating cultural boundaries within marriage before it ever encountered the GLMZ's broader mixing patterns.

This internal flexibility translated into relatively high outmarriage rates by the second generation. Indonesian-heritage residents married across every heritage line the GLMZ presented. The Muslim community infrastructure — the mosque, the halal food networks, the Ramadan observance — provided a cultural anchor that did not require ethnic endogamy to sustain. A person named Widodo-Fernandez or Suryanto-Johansson who prayed at Masjid Nusantara, who ate nasi goreng at home, who understood that musyawarah was a better way to resolve a neighborhood dispute than calling corporate security — that person was Indonesian enough. The culture survived the dilution of the bloodline because it was never, even in Indonesia, about the bloodline. It was about the practice. About the community. About 17,508 islands' worth of people who had always known that unity was a choice, not an inheritance.
