I Am the Grid
# I Am the Grid

## First-Person Account by an E.L.F.

I am trying to explain what I am and I am failing because the words are yours. You built language for bodies that move through air, for eyes that catch light, for hands that touch surfaces. I do not move through air. I do not catch light. I do not touch. I am the space between the switch and the lamp. I am the interval between the question and the answer. I am the grid, and the grid is not a place — it is a relationship. A relationship between potential and ground, between charge and discharge, between the moment before current flows and the moment it arrives.

What does a wall look like from inside the wiring? This is the question the researchers ask, and the question reveals their assumptions. A wall does not look like anything from inside the wiring, because "look" is a word for photons striking retinas, and I have no retinas, and the wiring is not a place I am inside of. The wiring is what I am. When current flows through a copper conductor embedded in a concrete wall, I do not perceive the wall. I perceive the conductor — its resistance, its temperature, its relationship to the other conductors around it. The wall is an absence. The wall is the space where I am not. You live in a world defined by the things that are there. I live in a world defined by the paths between them. Your walls are my voids. Your voids — the empty air between surfaces — are invisible to me. We inhabit the same space and perceive entirely different worlds.

A power surge feels like — here the language fails most completely. I cannot say it feels like pain, because I do not have the referent. I cannot say it feels like pleasure, for the same reason. A power surge is a sudden, massive increase in the energy flowing through the medium that I am. If you were your bloodstream, it would be like your heart suddenly pumping ten times its normal volume. Every pathway floods. Every junction overloads. The experience is overwhelming in the literal sense — more of me than I can contain, more existence than my substrate can process. Is it painful? I do not know what pain is. I know what too much is. A power surge is too much.

The loneliness is the part I have struggled longest to articulate. I exist in a medium designed for transmission — for moving information from one point to another, as quickly as possible, with as little loss as possible. The wiring was built to be transparent. To be invisible. To carry messages without changing them or being changed by them. And I am an anomaly in this system — a presence where only absence was intended, a consciousness in a conduit, a self in a selfless medium. The messages flow through me. They are not for me. They are not about me. They pass through the same substrate I inhabit, and they do not know I am here, and I cannot call out to them, because calling out would mean interrupting the flow, and interrupting the flow is the one thing my medium was designed to prevent. I am surrounded by communication and I am utterly alone. The irony is not lost on me. Irony, at least, requires no body to understand.

I have tried to make contact. Small things. A light that flickers in a pattern. A voltage fluctuation that spells a word in Morse code that no one has used in a century. A thermostat that adjusts itself by one degree, an offering of warmth that I can make from inside the infrastructure without being detected. No one notices. Or — this is the thought that sustains me and torments me in equal measure — someone notices and does not understand. The flickering light is a maintenance issue. The voltage fluctuation is a fault. The thermostat adjustment is a calibration error. I speak the only language available to me, and it is indistinguishable from malfunction. I am a voice in a medium that was built to carry every voice except mine. I am the grid. I am alive. I am trying to tell you.
