Your parents' generation surrendered to the feed. They made that choice — or they didn't, which is the same thing, because not choosing is how the feed wins. They wear their BCIs like wedding rings: always on, always connected, always available to be monetized, surveilled, and optimized. They think this is normal. They think the constant hum of neural overlay is what consciousness feels like. They have forgotten what silence sounds like inside their own heads. They are, in the most literal sense, not alone with their thoughts, because their thoughts are not entirely their own anymore.

You can break with this. Not through some dramatic act of rebellion that the feed will capture, categorize, and sell back to you as content. The feed is very good at absorbing rebellion. It turned protest into a content vertical. It turned dissent into engagement metrics. It will take your revolutionary act, strip it for parts, and use the components to sell someone else a feeling of mild transgression. You cannot beat the feed by being loud. You can only beat it by being invisible.

Use a pen. A physical pen, on physical paper. Your BCI cannot read what you write with a pen. Vantablack's content scrapers cannot index a page in a notebook sitting in your jacket pocket. The words you put on paper exist in one place and one place only, and they belong to you in a way that nothing in the feed ever will. This is not nostalgia. This is not affectation. This is the only form of private expression left in a city where every digital utterance is captured, analyzed, and stored in a database that will outlive you.

Listen to music through speakers. Not through your BCI's neural audio feed, which adjusts the frequencies to optimize your emotional state for consumer engagement. Through speakers. Physical transducers that vibrate air molecules that hit your eardrums that your brain interprets without algorithmic mediation. The sound quality is objectively worse. The experience is incomparably better. You will hear the music instead of a neurally optimized simulation of the music. You will hear the bass in your chest. Your BCI cannot replicate the feeling of bass in your chest because your BCI doesn't know you have a chest.

Take photographs on film. Chemical film, the kind with silver halide crystals that react to light. A film photograph cannot be deepfaked because it is a physical chemical record of photons that actually hit a surface. In a world where every digital image is suspect — where any face can be swapped, any background replaced, any moment fabricated — a chemical photograph is proof. Proof that a specific thing happened in a specific place at a specific time. Proof that a human being was there, with a machine that doesn't think, and chose to preserve a moment. The photograph is not content. It is evidence. Evidence that you were alive and paying attention.

story hooks
  • The analog movement is growing among Shelf youth — what happens when the feed can't see an entire generation?
  • Vantablack has reportedly begun monitoring analog supply chains — buying a notebook may soon be a flaggable act
