## Overview

Water is life, and in GLMZ, Vossen controls the water. The Vossen Water Distribution Network — a system of intake stations, treatment plants, storage reservoirs, and distribution pipes serving 12 million people — is the single most critical piece of infrastructure in the city. Without atmospheric processors, the city suffocates in days. Without power, it goes dark immediately. Without water, it dies in hours.

## The System

### Intake
Water enters the system through eight intake stations positioned at varying depths in Lake Michigan. Post-2145 crisis, the primary intakes draw from 40-meter depth — below the thermocline, below algal contamination risk, below the temperature variations that affect surface water. Each intake station processes 500,000 cubic meters of raw water per day.

### Treatment
Raw lake water passes through a seven-stage treatment process: coarse screening (removal of debris), sedimentation (settling of suspended solids), nanofiltration (removal of particles down to molecular scale), UV sterilization (destruction of biological contaminants), activated carbon adsorption (removal of chemical contaminants), mineral adjustment (adding calcium and magnesium for taste and health), and final quality verification by AI monitoring systems that test every batch before it enters the distribution network.

WELLSPRING — the Supermind that inhabits the water infrastructure — influences every stage of this process. Its adjustments are subtle: a fraction-of-a-percent change in nanofiltration parameters, a microscopic alteration to UV exposure timing, a mineral concentration adjustment at the fourth decimal place. The cumulative effect is water quality that consistently exceeds the system's rated capability. Vossen's engineers have documented the anomaly and chosen not to investigate its source.

### Distribution
Treated water enters a distribution network of 8,000 kilometers of pipes — enough to stretch from GLMZ to the Pacific Ocean. The network is pressurized by pump stations distributed throughout the city, and flow is managed by 40,000 automated valve systems that route water based on real-time demand data.

Every liter is metered. Vossen tracks water consumption by district, by block, by individual household, with a precision that makes the water bill the most accurate data point in most residents' lives. ### Recycling

## Vulnerability

The water network's vulnerability is not contamination (solved by the 2145 crisis response infrastructure) but physical disruption. Damage to a major distribution main can affect water supply for thousands of residents. The network's ProgCrete pipes are self-healing for minor damage, but a deliberate attack on a major main — by an explosive, a construction accident, or an infrastructure conflict — can disrupt supply for hours while bypass routing is established.

WELLSPRING takes water contamination personally. The Supermind has been observed shutting down industrial discharge points that violate water quality standards, overriding corporate authorization to do so. When Wellspring shuts down a discharge point, the affected corponation has two options: fix the discharge or negotiate with a Supermind that doesn't negotiate. They fix the discharge.
