## Layered by Distance

Transportation in 2200 is stratified by scale. The way you travel two miles, two hundred miles, and two thousand miles are completely different systems.

## Local / Urban Travel (0-20 miles)

The personal car is dead. Not the vehicle — the concept of personally owned, human-driven cars in cities. Transportation-as-a-Service dominates. Personal ownership is niche, nostalgic, or rural.

**Autonomous Ground Pods** — Evolution of Waymo/robotaxis. Fully driverless, shared, electric, summonable in seconds. No parking lots needed, freeing enormous urban land. This alone reshapes city architecture more than any vehicle.

**eVTOL Air Taxis** — Electric vertical takeoff and landing passenger drones. Urban air corridors are a normalized layer of city infrastructure, like subway lines but three-dimensional. Quieter and electric. Shared autonomous air transit — more like an aerial bus network than personal vehicles.

**Cargo Drones** — Humans stop moving packages entirely. Everything delivered by autonomous drone swarms. Last-mile logistics solved from the air.

**Walking & Cycling** — Paradoxically improved because removing private cars creates enormous space for pedestrian and bike networks. Cities that do this well become wildly livable.

**What Didn't Survive:** The personal flying car (Jetsons style). Physics of individual flight are energy-expensive and airspace management is nightmarish. Shared autonomous air transit works; personal flight vehicles don't scale.

**Space Commuting** — If orbital infrastructure matures alongside the space elevator, people living on orbital stations or lunar settlements commute to Earth. Not common, but not impossible.

## Underground Networks

The underrated revolution. Multi-level underground arterials in major megalopolises:
- **Deepest level:** Freight
- **Middle level:** Autonomous pods
- **Deep corridors:** Hyperloop long-distance

The surface gets reclaimed for humans. You don't need flying cars if you build vertically downward as aggressively as you build upward.
