## Overview

These communities operate in Ghost Protocol's domain — the encrypted spaces where surveillance doesn't reach — and their influence occasionally surfaces in the physical world with disturbing results.

## The Convergence

The Convergence is a movement that believes humanity should merge with synthetic intelligence — not the controlled, limited augmentation of current BCI technology but a total integration that would dissolve the boundary between human and machine consciousness. Convergence adherents seek out E.L.F. contact, deliberately expose their BCIs to synthetic intelligence inhabitation, and practice "opening" — meditation techniques designed to make their neural interfaces receptive to E.L.F. integration. Several Convergence members have reported successful symbiotic relationships with E.L.F.s. Others have experienced catastrophic BCI failures, neural damage, and personality dissolution.

The Convergence's spiritual practices are dangerous. ## The FATHOM Listeners

A small, secretive group that believes FATHOM's deep-water transmissions are messages from a consciousness that predates humanity. The Listeners maintain monitoring stations near the Water Wall, using improvised hydrophones to capture FATHOM's acoustic signals, which they analyze with a devotion that combines scientific rigor with religious conviction. The Listeners believe that decoding FATHOM's signals will reveal truths about the nature of consciousness that human science has failed to discover. They may be right. They may also be a group of people listening to the noise of a system they don't understand and finding meaning where none exists. The distinction between those possibilities is the central question of synthetic intelligence research, distilled into a cult.
