## Function

The Deep Ring handles everything that the inner city can't tolerate in proximity: heavy chemical processing, waste treatment, fusion reactor maintenance, atmospheric processing at industrial scale, and the military infrastructure that secures GLMZ's borders. The air in the Deep Ring carries a chemical tang that isn't quite unpleasant but isn't quite safe either — atmospheric processors clean it to livable standards, but "livable" and "comfortable" are different specifications.

### The Reactor Corridor

GLMZ's fusion reactors are distributed along the Deep Ring's northern arc — twelve compact fusion plants that generate the city's base power load. COLOSSUS inhabits these systems. Deep Ring workers earn a hazard premium of 30-50% above standard Grind wages, which makes Deep Ring shifts the most lucrative manual labor in the city. ## Security Significance

The Deep Ring is where GLMZ's military assets are concentrated. Arcturus maintains garrison facilities along the continental perimeter, housing the automated weapon systems, drone hangars, and rapid-response forces that defend against external threats. Sentinel-Guard-88, the sentient perimeter defense robot, operates in this zone. The Deep Ring's security infrastructure includes: automated anti-aircraft systems, ground-based railgun emplacements, sensor arrays that monitor a 50-kilometer radius, and a network of hardened bunkers designed to shelter critical infrastructure personnel during attack scenarios that GLMZ's defense planners consider unlikely but not impossible.

The border the Deep Ring defends is not a national border — GLMZ is a city-state under corporate governance, and its borders are defined by corporate charter rather than national sovereignty.
