The Cloud Gardens: Vertical Farm District
# The Cloud Gardens: Vertical Farm District

## Overview

The Cloud Gardens are GLMZ's primary food production zone — a network of 200+ vertical farms occupying converted arcology floors, purpose-built agricultural towers, and repurposed industrial space across the city's mid-levels. Together, they produce 65% of the city's fresh food supply: vegetables, fruit, fungi, cultured protein, and the algae-based products that form the caloric foundation of the UBC food allocation.

## Architecture of Food

A standard vertical farm occupies a single arcology floor — roughly 4,000 square meters of growing space, stacked in racks 20 levels high, bathed in spectrum-tuned LED light, and irrigated by closed-loop hydroponic systems that recycle 98% of their water. The air inside a vertical farm is humid, warm, and carries the green-sharp smell of growing things — a scent so rare in GLMZ that farm workers report it as the best perk of the job.

GARDENER — the Supermind that inhabits agricultural systems — is everywhere in the Cloud Gardens. Every nutrient concentration, every light spectrum adjustment, every pollination schedule bears GARDENER's invisible influence. The farms' official management AI handles routine operations; GARDENER handles the optimizations that push yield and quality beyond what the official systems can achieve. Farm operators know GARDENER exists. They don't interfere. The 23% yield improvement speaks for itself.

## The Mushroom Levels

Below the hydroponic farms, in spaces too dark and damp for conventional agriculture, the Mushroom Levels produce the fungal products that are a staple of GLMZ's diet. Mushroom cultivation requires minimal light and thrives in the humid, temperature-stable conditions of the city's deeper levels. The Mushroom Levels produce 40 varieties of edible fungi, from common button mushrooms to engineered strains that provide complete amino acid profiles, making them a viable protein source for UBC recipients who can't afford cultured meat.

## Cultured Protein Facilities

The Cloud Gardens include 12 cultured protein facilities that grow meat, fish, and dairy products from cell cultures without animals. The technology is mature — cultured protein is indistinguishable from farmed protein in taste, texture, and nutrition — but the cost is higher than plant-based alternatives. Cultured steak costs Φ15/kg, compared to Φ2/kg for algae protein. This makes cultured protein a mid-tier luxury: affordable for Grind workers and arcology residents, aspirational for the Shelf.

## Food Politics

Control of food production is control of the population. Tessera dominates the Cloud Gardens, operating 140 of the 200+ farms and all 12 cultured protein facilities. This gives Tessera leverage that extends far beyond agriculture: the company that feeds the city can, in theory, starve it. This theoretical power has never been exercised directly, but it shadows every negotiation Tessera enters. When Tessera wants a zoning concession or a regulatory exemption, the other corponations are aware that the alternative to agreement is a food supply controlled by a company with a grievance.

GARDENER's presence complicates this dynamic. If Tessera attempted to weaponize the food supply, GARDENER would likely intervene — the Supermind's priorities are agricultural, not corporate. This creates a bizarre strategic situation: the most powerful constraint on Tessera's agricultural monopoly is not regulation, not competition, but a Supermind that cares about plants more than profits.
