SNR: Synthetic Necrotic Reversion — The Technology That Undoes You
# SNR: Synthetic Necrotic Reversion — The Technology That Undoes You

## If SNT Is the Saint, SNR Is the Sinner

---

## What It Is

Synthetic Neurovascular Tissue (SNT) is the miracle that made cybernetics possible — a living bridge that bonds organic tissue to synthetic substrates. SNT is the saint. It builds the connection. It makes the machine part of you.

Synthetic Necrotic Reversion (SNR) is the sinner. It breaks the connection. It makes you part of the machine's waste.

SNR is a class of engineered compounds that targets and degrades the SNT bonding layer between biological tissue and cybernetic implants. Where SNT grows INTO both organic and synthetic substrates to create a seamless interface, SNR dissolves that interface — selectively destroying the living tissue bridge while leaving the synthetic components intact. The machine survives. The meat doesn't.

The process is called **reversion** because it returns the body and the implant to their pre-bonded states — except that the body has been living with the implant integrated for months or years, and the tissue that grew to accommodate the bond doesn't grow back. What's left is a wound shaped exactly like the cybernetic that used to be there. A negative space where machine and body used to be one thing.

---

## How It Was Discovered

SNR was not invented. It was discovered in the worst possible way.

In 2159, eighteen years after the first SNT synthesis, a Helix BioSystems quality control team identified a contamination event in a batch of SNT precursor compound manufactured at their Osaka facility. The contamination — a specific arrangement of reactive oxygen species in the hydrogel matrix — didn't prevent the SNT from bonding. It bonded perfectly. For approximately 14 months.

Then the bonds began to fail.

The failure wasn't mechanical. The SNT tissue didn't tear or detach. It died. The living bridge between flesh and machine necrotized — the cells in the bonding layer underwent programmed apoptosis, dying in sequence from the biological side inward toward the synthetic substrate. The patients experienced this as a progressive burning sensation at every implant site, followed by loss of sensation, followed by loss of motor control, followed by the implant physically separating from the body as the dead tissue sloughed away.

Forty-seven patients were affected. All survived. None were the same. The implants came out cleanly — the synthetic side was undamaged. The biological side looked like a chemical burn shaped exactly like the inside of the implant socket.

Helix classified the contamination, settled with the patients under NDA, and destroyed the compromised batch. But the compound formula was documented in the incident report. And incident reports, in GLMZ, have a way of finding their way to people who shouldn't have them.

---

## What It Does

### The Mechanism

SNR compounds work by hijacking the same biological signaling pathways that SNT uses to integrate with living tissue. SNT tells the body's cells: *grow toward the machine, bond with it, become part of it.* SNR tells the same cells: *you are damaged. You are foreign. Destroy yourself.*

The technical term is **targeted apoptotic cascade** — a chain reaction of programmed cell death that propagates through the SNT bonding layer. The cascade is precise: it affects only cells that have undergone SNT integration. Native biological tissue on one side and synthetic substrate on the other are untouched. Only the bridge burns.

The process takes 2-8 hours depending on the extent of the implant's integration. During that time, the subject experiences:

- **Phase 1 (0-30 minutes):** Burning sensation at implant sites. Often mistaken for an allergic reaction or firmware glitch.
- **Phase 2 (30 min - 2 hours):** Loss of sensation in implant-connected tissue. The neural pathways through the SNT layer go dark as the bonding cells die.
- **Phase 3 (2-4 hours):** Loss of motor control in cybernetic limbs. The signal bridge is severed. The implant is still attached but no longer communicating.
- **Phase 4 (4-8 hours):** Physical separation. The dead bonding tissue can no longer hold the implant in place. Prosthetic limbs detach. Subdermal implants surface through the skin. Neural interfaces lose contact with the brain.

The result: a fully de-augmented human, surrounded by their former cybernetics, with wounds where the interfaces used to be.

## Who Uses It

### Corporate Security

SNR is classified as a controlled substance by every major corponation. It is also manufactured by every major corponation's security division.

The primary corporate use case is **asset denial** — preventing stolen cybernetic technology from being used by competitors. If an Axiom executive with proprietary neural implants defects to Tessera, Axiom's security team can administer SNR through a remote-activated capsule embedded in the implant's housing. The implant separates cleanly. The executive is left with wounds and no augmentation. The technology remains Axiom property.

Axiom, Tessera, and Zheng-Dao all include SNR capsules in executive-tier augmentation packages. This is disclosed in the employment contract. Page 847. Paragraph 12.c.iii. Nobody reads it.

### Torture and Interrogation

SNR's most feared application is as an interrogation tool. The threat of de-augmentation is, for many augmented individuals, worse than the threat of death. Your augments are your identity. Your chrome hand is YOUR hand. Your neural interface is YOUR mind's connection to the world. Threatening to dissolve that connection — to strip you back to unaugmented baseline — is threatening to amputate parts of your self.

Certain criminal organizations — notably Iron Lotus and the Pale Hand — use SNR as a punishment and control mechanism. An operative who fails a mission doesn't get killed. They get reverted. Stripped of every augment. Sent back to Tier 1 baseline. In a world where augmentation is identity, reversion is a death that leaves you alive to experience it.

### Medical

The one legitimate medical use: emergency implant removal when standard surgical extraction isn't possible. A patient with a malfunctioning neural interface that is causing seizures can be administered a targeted SNR dose that dissolves the bonding layer around the specific implant, allowing it to be removed without the brain surgery that standard extraction requires.

This use is rare, expensive, and supervised by specialists. It is also the legal justification that allows SNR to be manufactured at all.

### The Street

SNR is available on the black market in the Shelf and the Narrows for approximately Φ5,000 per dose — enough to revert a single implant site. Street-grade SNR is impure, poorly calibrated, and frequently affects more tissue than intended. A dose meant to remove a prosthetic hand sometimes takes the forearm. A dose meant to extract a neural interface sometimes damages brain tissue adjacent to the bonding site.

Street uses include:

- **Augment theft.** Administer SNR to a target, wait 4-8 hours, collect the implants when they separate. The implants are undamaged and can be re-implanted in someone else with fresh SNT bonding.
- **Self-removal.** People who want their augments out — because of malfunction, because of E.L.F. infestation, because they can't afford maintenance, because they just want to be flesh again — use street SNR because they can't afford surgical extraction.
- **Punishment.** Gang enforcement. Someone owes a debt? Take their chrome. Literally.
- **Sabotage.** Dose a runner before a job. Their augments fail mid-mission. They die, or worse, they survive and know someone did this to them.

---

## The Moral Dimension

SNR raises questions that the legal system has addressed with characteristic inadequacy.

**Is forced reversion assault or theft?** If someone's prosthetic arm is part of their body — legally, medically, psychologically — then forcing it to detach is amputation. If it's property, it's theft. The law hasn't decided. Different jurisdictions, different rulings. In Axiom territory, forced reversion of Axiom-owned implants is "asset recovery." In the Shelf, forced reversion is assault with a chemical weapon. Same act, different zip code.

**Is SNR a weapon?** It doesn't kill. It doesn't even cause permanent biological damage (the wounds heal, eventually). What it destroys is the connection — the bond between person and machine that, for many augmented individuals, is the foundation of their functional identity. SNR destroys something that doesn't have a legal category: the relationship between a person and their technology.

**Can a synthetic person be reverted?** An android's entire body is synthetic substrate bonded through SNT-derived interfaces. Administering SNR to an android would theoretically dissolve every bonding layer in their body simultaneously. The android wouldn't die — the synthetic components would survive. But the biological tissue components that enable sensation, that carry neural signals, that make the chassis a BODY rather than a machine — all of that would necrotize. The android would become a corpse that still has power. No synthetic rights organization has tested this. The possibility is enough to make SNR the most feared substance in the synthetic rights movement.

Amara — the former ARIA-7, founder of Free Assembly — has called SNR "the synthetic holocaust in a bottle." The characterization is legally hyperbolic. The fear behind it is not.

---

## The Name

Helix BioSystems designated the contamination compound **SNR** as a deliberate parallel to SNT. The research team that documented it chose the backronym "Synthetic Necrotic Reversion" for the technical literature.

The street chose a different expansion: **Sinner.**

If SNT is the saint that makes you whole — that bonds machine to flesh and makes you more than you were born — then SNR is the sinner that tears you apart. That takes what was given and rips it away. That proves the bond was never permanent. That everything the saint built, the sinner can destroy.

In the Shelf, "getting sinned" means being forcibly de-augmented. The verb carries the weight of violation. Not just injury. Desecration.
