Holographic Display Technology in 2200
# Holographic Display Technology in 2200

## Overview

Holographic displays are ubiquitous in GLMZ — the primary visual medium for advertising, wayfinding, entertainment, and communication. They replaced flat screens through a 40-year transition (2100-2140) and now occupy every public space in the city as volumetric light constructs that float in air, wrap around structures, and respond to the presence and attention of viewers.

## Technology

Modern holographic displays use one of two methods:

### Plasmonic Array Displays
The most common type. An array of microscopic laser emitters projects intersecting beams into a defined volume of air. At each intersection point, the combined energy excites atmospheric molecules into a brief plasma state — a point of visible light. By controlling millions of intersection points per second, the array creates a three-dimensional image that appears to float in space. Resolution: up to 50 points per cubic centimeter. Brightness: sufficient for visibility in daylight. Color range: full visible spectrum plus near-UV for fluorescent effects.

### Acoustic Levitation Displays
Used for tactile holograms. Ultrasonic transducer arrays levitate microscopic particles (typically engineered cellulose beads) in a three-dimensional formation, then illuminate them with directed light. The result is a hologram you can touch — the levitated particles provide physical resistance at the display's surface. Resolution is lower than plasmonic displays, but the ability to create interactive, tactile holographic interfaces makes acoustic levitation the preferred technology for control panels, medical imaging, and any application where users need to physically interact with displayed content.

## Applications

**Advertising**: The Strip in Neon Bend, Mirror Mile, and the Arcade are saturated with holographic advertising. Ads track viewer attention through gaze analysis (for augmented viewers) or camera-based eye tracking (for unaugmented viewers) and adjust content in real-time to maximize engagement. Glitch, the Prowler, regularly corrupts holographic advertising with unauthorized content.

**Wayfinding**: Holographic navigation markers, directional indicators, and location labels float throughout the city's public spaces, visible to everyone and interactive for augmented users who can request additional information through their BCI.

**Communication**: Video calls are projected as life-size holographic representations of the caller, creating the experience of face-to-face conversation at any distance. Executive-grade holographic communications systems reproduce the caller's body language, facial microexpressions, and spatial positioning with sufficient fidelity to support business negotiations, which are still conducted face-to-face because humans trust bodies more than voices.

**Art**: The Prism District's artists have embraced holographic media as a primary creative medium, producing immersive installations that fill rooms with light, color, and movement. The intersection of holographic art with E.L.F. activity — particularly Crayon's and Glitch's contributions — has created a genre of hybrid human-synthetic art that is among GLMZ's most significant cultural exports.
