Diaspora Fashion: How GLMZ Dresses
# Diaspora Fashion: How GLMZ Dresses

## Overview

Fashion in GLMZ reflects the Diaspora — the blending of every human culture on Earth into a population that has no single heritage and therefore draws from all of them. The result is a visual culture that treats human clothing traditions as an open library: elements from every era and every culture are available, combinable, and constantly recombined into styles that have no historical precedent but carry echoes of everything that came before.

## The Layers

GLMZ fashion is built in layers — both literally (the city's temperature varies wildly between districts and levels) and culturally (each layer carries social information that the informed observer can read).

**Base Layer**: Functional clothing worn against the skin. For augmented individuals, the base layer often incorporates biosensors that monitor health metrics and temperature-regulating fabrics that adjust warmth based on environmental conditions. For operators and the security-conscious, the base layer is Faraday-lined.

**Mid Layer**: The identity layer — the clothing that expresses who you are, where you're from (culturally, not geographically), and what you do. The mid layer is where Diaspora fusion happens: a Japanese-cut jacket in West African kente-inspired fabric. Scandinavian knitwear with South Asian embroidery patterns. Latin American leather work adapted to Korean design sensibilities.

**Outer Layer**: Environmental protection and social signaling. Armored jackets for operators. Corporate uniforms for the employed. Rainwear for anyone moving through areas where Dewpoint is active or the atmospheric processors are venting moisture.

## Class Markers

Fashion is the most visible class marker in GLMZ. Shelf residents wear practical, durable clothing in muted colors — engineered textiles that last years, repaired rather than replaced. Grind workers wear safety-rated workwear during shifts and Shelf fashion off-duty. Arcology residents wear corporate-influenced fashion: clean lines, premium materials, and the subtle indicators of augmentation (BCI port visibility, subdermal antenna patterns) that mark them as enhanced. Mirror Mile's executive class wears bespoke tailoring that costs more than a Shelf resident earns in a year.

## Augmentation as Fashion

The visibility of augmentation hardware has become a fashion statement in itself. First-generation augmentation was hidden: neural interfaces were concealed beneath hair, subdermal implants were invisible. Current fashion trends celebrate augmentation visibility: illuminated BCI ports, decorative antenna array patterns, and the deliberate display of subdermal hardware as body modification art. The "chrome aesthetic" — exposed metallic augmentation hardware styled as jewelry — originated in the Shelf and has been adopted (and sanitized) by arcology fashion houses.

## Synthetic Fashion

Synthetic persons have developed their own fashion traditions. Androids — whose chassis are their bodies — use external clothing as pure expression, unconstrained by biological needs for warmth or protection. Synthetic fashion tends toward the architecturally dramatic: structural garments that exploit the synthetic body's ability to support heavy materials, elaborate constructions that would be uncomfortable for biological wearers, and clothing that incorporates LED elements, holographic projections, and interactive materials that respond to the wearer's synthetic systems.

Haven's Naming Day celebrations are the city's most significant synthetic fashion event, where androids debut outfits that represent their chosen identities. The creativity on display at Naming Day has made it a pilgrimage for the fashion-conscious of every biological category.
