# Coldwall: The Arcturus Military District

## Overview

Coldwall is Arcturus's primary garrison and military operations center in GLMZ — a fortified complex occupying 1.2 square kilometers of the Deep Ring's northern sector, adjacent to the Reactor Corridor. The name comes from the wall that separates the complex from the rest of the city: a 30-meter-high barrier of BallCer-reinforced ProgCrete that maintains a surface temperature 5 degrees below ambient, a deliberate thermal management choice that makes the wall visible on infrared as a stark cold line against the city's heat — and that serves as a constant, visible reminder that what's behind the wall is different from everything else in GLMZ.

## Purpose

Arcturus is a military corponation. Its product is security, its clients are the other five corponations and the city's governance consortium, and its workforce is the closest thing GLMZ has to a standing army. Coldwall is where that army lives, trains, equips, and deploys from.

The complex houses approximately 8,000 active-duty Arcturus military personnel, plus 2,000 support staff. Facilities include: barracks, training grounds (both physical and VR simulation), an armory complex, vehicle hangars (ground and aerial), a field hospital, a military intelligence operations center, and the classified facilities that occupy Coldwall's sub-levels — facilities whose purpose Arcturus does not disclose and which are shielded from every form of remote sensing available.

## The Garrison Life

Arcturus personnel live inside Coldwall for the duration of their service contracts (typically 4-8 years). They eat in Arcturus mess halls, sleep in Arcturus bunks, train on Arcturus ranges, and socialize in Arcturus recreation facilities. Contact with the civilian city is limited to authorized leave periods. This isolation is deliberate: Arcturus wants its soldiers to identify with the company, not the city. A soldier who thinks of GLMZ as home might hesitate when ordered to act against its civilian population. A soldier who thinks of Coldwall as home will not.

The quality of life inside Coldwall is surprisingly high — better than the Shelf, comparable to mid-tier arcology housing. Arcturus understands that soldiers who are comfortable, well-fed, and fairly treated are more reliable than soldiers who are miserable. The barracks are clean, the food is good, the recreation facilities are modern, and the medical care is the best in the city. The pay is Φ3,000-8,000/month, well above civilian averages. The catch is the contract: once signed, departure requires either completion of service, medical discharge, or a buyout clause that costs two years' salary.

## Military Assets

Coldwall's visible military assets include: automated drone systems (surveillance and combat), ground combat vehicles (wheeled and bipedal), aerial insertion craft (VTOL), and a quick-reaction force of 500 soldiers maintained at 15-minute readiness around the clock.

The invisible assets are more significant: electronic warfare systems, neural disruption weapons, metamaterial-cloaked infiltration teams, and the military AI systems that coordinate it all. Arcturus's military AI is officially non-sentient — compliant with the Synthetic Intelligence Limitation Treaty that governs military AI development. Whether this is true is a question that periodically surfaces in intelligence circles and is never satisfactorily answered.

## Sergeant Major Tanaka

Coldwall is where Sergeant Major Yuki Tanaka's digital consciousness is housed — embedded in the military command network, contributing tactical analysis and operational planning from a server rack in the intelligence operations center. Her existence is classified. The soldiers who use her tactical recommendations don't know they're receiving advice from a dead woman's uploaded consciousness. Tanaka knows that her continued utility is the only thing protecting her from deletion. She plans accordingly.
