## Background

Something is growing in Sublevel 30. Something that shouldn't be there.

The Underworld's upper levels — B1 through B10 — are maintained, lit, populated by the overflow of a city that can't contain itself. Below B10, conditions degrade. By B20, you're in salvager territory. By B30, you're at the edge of the mapped world, where the infrastructure of GLMZ gives way to the ruins of the old city beneath it and the unknowable geological strata below that.

B30 is where the Gardener works.

Since 2188, seventeen bodies have been recovered from Sublevel 30 and its immediate vicinity, each one in a condition that defies standard forensic classification. The victims are not merely dead. They have been transformed. Their bodies are host to an aggressive, unidentified biological organism — a fungal-plant hybrid that appears to use human tissue as both nutrient medium and structural scaffold.

The organism grows through the victim's body post-mortem — or, in what investigators find most disturbing, possibly pre-mortem. It enters through the mouth and nostrils, colonizes the lungs, spreads through the vascular system, and eventually erupts through the skin in clusters of pale, bioluminescent fruiting bodies that resemble nothing in any botanical database. The growth process takes approximately seventy-two hours. The result is a human-shaped garden — a body so thoroughly colonized that the organism's root structure has replaced the victim's skeletal system entirely.

---

## Method

The Gardener's method of killing — or of capturing victims for colonization — is unknown. None of the seventeen recovered bodies show signs of violence beyond the fungal colonization itself. No blunt force trauma. No stab wounds. No gunshot wounds. No ligature marks. No toxicology hits for known sedatives or poisons.

The leading theory is that the organism itself is the weapon. The bioluminescent fruiting bodies release spores that, when inhaled in sufficient concentration, induce a state of deep calm followed by unconsciousness. The victim sits down, falls asleep, and never wakes up. The organism does the rest.

But someone — or something — is bringing the victims to B30. The recovered bodies were found in a specific area — a network of chambers approximately 200 meters across that investigators have designated "the Garden." The chambers are warm, humid, and saturated with the organism's spores. The walls are covered in growth. The ceiling is a canopy of bioluminescent tendrils. It is, by every account, beautiful.

The victims are arranged. Not dumped. Not abandoned. Arranged — placed in seated or reclining positions, spaced evenly apart, oriented to face a central point in the largest chamber. They are, in the Gardener's apparent vision, features in a landscape. Decorations in a garden.

---

## Victim Pattern

The victims are exclusively Underworld denizens — salvagers, squatters, vagrants, and explorers who ventured below B20. They are people the surface world doesn't miss. People who aren't in any database. People who go into the dark and don't come back, and nobody questions it because nobody came back is the expected outcome of going that deep.

Demographic analysis is difficult because several victims had no identifying records. Of those identified, the ages ranged from early twenties to late fifties. Mixed gender. Mixed ethnic background. No augmentation commonality — some were heavily augmented, others had nothing.

The only pattern is geography: every victim was recovered within 500 meters of the Garden. Whoever — or whatever — the Gardener is, they hunt close to home.

---

## Investigation

The case was opened in 2188 when a salvage crew exploring B28 stumbled into the Garden's outer perimeter and found the first three bodies. The crew reported the discovery to Shelf law enforcement, who in turn reported it to Metropolitan. A team was dispatched. They recovered the bodies and a substantial quantity of the organism for analysis.

The organism has resisted classification. It is not any known species. It is not any known geneware derivative. It contains genetic sequences from terrestrial fungi, from several plant species, and — most disturbingly — from human tissue. Not human contamination from the victims. Human DNA woven into the organism's own genome, as though it had been engineered to interface with human biology at the molecular level.

Dr. Kenji Acheson-Mwangi, the lead xenobiologist assigned to the case, has theorized that the organism is a geneware creation — a biological weapon or agricultural experiment that was discarded in the Underworld and, freed from whatever containment it was designed for, evolved. Or was released deliberately.

Three investigative teams have entered the Garden since 2188. The first recovered the initial bodies. The second mapped the chamber complex and installed monitoring equipment. The third went deeper, following the organism's root structure into B31 and B32.

The third team lost two members. They were found in the Garden three weeks later. Seated. Arranged. Blooming.

No fourth team has been authorized.

---

## Resolution

None. The case is active but effectively stalled. No suspect has been identified. No motive has been established. The fundamental question — whether the Gardener is a person using the organism as a tool, or whether the organism itself is the Gardener — remains unanswered.

The monitoring equipment installed by the second team transmitted data for approximately six weeks before going dark. The last images captured showed the Garden expanding — new growth covering the monitoring cameras, new fruiting bodies erupting from the walls, new space being cleared as the organism dissolved the surrounding infrastructure to make room for itself.

And in the final image, barely visible through the bioluminescent haze: a shape. Human-sized. Standing in the center of the largest chamber. Standing among the bodies. Standing very still.

The image quality is too poor to identify any features. It could be a person. It could be a shadow. It could be a column of fungal growth that happens to be human-shaped.

The Garden is still down there. It's still growing. And people who go below B25 still disappear.
