## Background

Twenty-six bodies were found in the Underworld's uppermost levels between 2112 and 2118, each killed by the same method: the forcible installation of incompatible augmentation hardware. Arms ripped from sockets and replaced with industrial servos too powerful for the human skeletal structure. Eyes gouged out and replaced with optical sensors designed for mining equipment. Spinal columns cracked open and threaded with crude neural cables that connected to nothing.

The victims were not merely killed. They were retrofitted — modified with technology that was never designed for human bodies, installed without anesthesia, without surgical precision, without any apparent concern for whether the subject survived the process. Most didn't. The ones who did survive the initial installation died within hours as their bodies rejected the hardware with catastrophic inflammation, septic shock, and structural collapse.

## Method

The Butcher operated in the Underworld's upper levels — B1 through B5 — in an era when those levels were essentially unpoliced wilderness. Victims were taken from the streets, dragged below, and subjected to the modification process in what investigators later identified as a converted industrial workspace on B3 — a room containing welding equipment, industrial hydraulics, and approximately six hundred kilograms of salvaged augmentation hardware in various states of disrepair.

The workspace was discovered in 2118, after the killings stopped. It was empty. The Butcher had left everything behind — the tools, the hardware, the bloodstained operating table. Everything except themselves.

## Victim Pattern

The victims were exclusively unaugmented — one of the few commonalities in a case that otherwise defied pattern analysis. In the early 2110s, being unaugmented on the Shelf was increasingly dangerous — a social and economic liability in a city rushing toward cybernetic integration. The Butcher targeted people who had resisted or been unable to afford augmentation and forcibly "upgraded" them with salvaged industrial hardware.

The Underworld crime scene was contaminated by scavengers before investigators arrived. The salvaged hardware yielded no usable forensic evidence — it had been handled by dozens of people before reaching the Butcher's workshop. The victims, mostly unregistered Shelf transients, were difficult to identify and harder to trace.

The case went cold in 2119. It has been reviewed three times since, most recently in 2195, with no new leads. The Basement Butcher remains one of the founding nightmares of GLMZ — a reminder that the city's first decade was not the gleaming origin story the corponations prefer to tell, but something darker, cruder, and drenched in blood.
