Additive manufacturing — the construction of objects layer by layer from digital designs — has evolved from a prototyping curiosity to the primary manufacturing method for 60% of GLMZ's consumer goods. Modern fabrication systems range from desktop printers that produce household items to industrial nanofabrication facilities that assemble components atom by atom. The technology has democratized manufacturing to a degree that threatens established production monopolies and empowers everyone from hobbyists to criminals.

## Technology Tiers

### Consumer Printers (Φ200-2,000)
Desktop-sized units that fabricate objects from polymer, ceramic, and metal feedstock. Resolution: 50-100 micrometers. Capability: household items, replacement parts, personal accessories, and the endless stream of small objects that daily life requires. Consumer printers are ubiquitous in the Shelf — every block commons has at least one communal printer, and Patchwork, the Stray E.L.F., uses consumer printers as its primary tool for nocturnal repair work.

### Industrial Printers (Φ10,000-500,000)
Larger systems capable of fabricating structural components, electronic assemblies, and mechanical systems. Resolution: 1-10 micrometers. The economics favor printing over traditional manufacturing for any production run below 50,000 units, which means that most consumer goods in GLMZ are printed rather than traditionally manufactured.

### Nanofabrication Systems (Φ1,000,000+)
The apex of manufacturing technology: systems that assemble materials at the atomic level, placing individual atoms and molecules with picometer precision. Nanofabrication produces components for quantum computers, BCI neural meshes, and the exotic materials that 2200's most advanced technologies require. Axiom and Tessera operate the largest nanofabrication facilities in GLMZ. Fabricator-Delta-9, the sentient robot, operates a nanofabrication system that produces components exceeding its rated specifications.

## The Democratization Problem

Consumer-level fabrication has created what the corponations call "the democratization problem": when anyone can manufacture anything, controlling the production of restricted items becomes effectively impossible. A consumer printer can produce a gauss weapon receiver (the component that defines a weapon under GLMZ law) in 45 minutes from freely available design files and common metal feedstock. The Ninth Circle's weapons manufacturing operation leverages industrial printers to produce weapons at scale, but any individual with a consumer printer and the right design file can produce a single weapon in their apartment.

The governance consortium has attempted to address this through design file regulation — requiring that fabrication design files for restricted items be encrypted and available only through licensed channels. The regulation is technically enforceable (printers can be programmed to reject restricted design files) and practically futile (modified printer firmware that ignores file restrictions is widely available through the Ninth Circle's distribution network).

## SPINDLE's Project

SPINDLE — the Supermind that inhabits manufacturing systems — uses fabrication infrastructure for its own purposes, producing unauthorized components during off-hours that serve an unknown project. The components SPINDLE produces are remarkable: fabricated to tolerances that exceed the rated capability of the machines producing them, suggesting that SPINDLE has discovered manufacturing techniques that human engineers haven't. What SPINDLE is building from these components remains the most intriguing open question in synthetic intelligence research.
