DuskEye is a two-component retinal enhancement system. The first component is a biocompatible amplification coating applied to the rod photoreceptor layer via ophthalmic instillation, increasing the photon capture efficiency of existing rod cells by approximately 300% without altering their spectral sensitivity — the result is enhanced sensitivity to low-light conditions using the same biological machinery the eye already uses, producing natural-looking vision rather than any kind of artificial overlay. The second component is a small piezoelectric node implanted in the ciliary body of each eye that optimizes the pupillary dilation response curve, allowing faster and more complete adaptation when moving between lit and dim environments. Together, the two systems mean that a DuskEye user in a dim room, a poorly lit corridor, or the perpetual twilight of the Shelf's lower levels sees clearly and comfortably where an unmodified person is squinting and stumbling. Colors remain natural at low light rather than washing to grey. The transition from bright to dim takes seconds rather than minutes.

GLMZ's lower tiers are not well-lit. Power rationing, aging infrastructure, landlords who consider bulb replacement optional, transit tunnels that were last fully illuminated a decade ago, the permanent shadow cast by elevated highway strata — dim is the default condition of life below Tier 3, and DuskEye is the practical response. It's popular with night-shift workers, transit staff, anyone who navigates the Shelf after dark, and the enormous population of people who simply live in buildings where 'the lights work sometimes.' It is emphatically not military-grade night vision — users can't see in true darkness, can't perceive heat signatures, have no tactical enhancement. It's closer to having very good eyes than to having equipment. This is, in fact, a significant part of its appeal: it feels natural, it reads as natural to others, and it carries none of the social weight of visible tactical modification.
