The MoodGlow is a thin flexible array of bioluminescent micro-cells implanted just beneath the translucent outer dermis of the forehead, spanning a band roughly 1 centimeter tall positioned between the hairline and brow. The cells respond to a combination of inputs: voluntary user control via a companion app or linked neural gesture, and — when the user enables it — a passive emotional inference layer that reads galvanic skin response, heart rate variability, and micro-muscular tension from the implant's embedded sensors to generate a color and pattern output that reflects the user's affective state. The system ships with a library of 240 standard emotional display patterns, from a slow warm amber pulse indicating calm contentment to a rapid cyan flicker associated with excitement. Users can design and save custom patterns through the PulsePoint Palette app. The light output is subtle in daylight and vivid in low light — roughly equivalent to a softly glowing LED seen through frosted glass, warm and readable without being harsh.

The MoodGlow emerged from youth culture in GLMZ's Tier 2 nightlife scene about eight years ago and has since spread across age groups, though it remains most associated with people under 30. For many users, it started as a fashion statement — a way to wear emotion visibly, to signal authenticity and openness in a city where most social interaction is mediated through screens and subvocal channels. For neurodivergent users and people with conditions affecting facial expression, it has become something more functional: a way to communicate emotional state that doesn't require the subtle facial muscle control that neurotypical social reading depends on. A person whose face is hard to read can broadcast clearly.
