Arden Salazar
Arden Salazar is a small, round-faced nine-year-old with his South African grandfather's dark complexion and his Russian grandmother's light gray eyes, a combination that makes people look at him twice in a way he has not yet decided whether to be proud of. He has been at the Stockyard's communal housing block since he was six, when his mother didn't come back from a job and no one came to explain why. He has the characteristic roughness of a Stockyard kid — scuffed knees, hair grown out past caring, a jacket two sizes too large that he found and claimed as territory. He has no augmentations of any kind. The Copperheads, a junior street crew that operates in the Stockyard's eastern blocks, have noticed him the way they notice all the unattached kids — as resource or recruitment opportunity. So far he has run two lookout shifts for them, for which he was paid in food rather than Quanta, which tells you something about both the crew's resources and his bargaining position.
He is, underneath the hard-knock exterior, a nine-year-old who still sleeps with his knees pulled to his chest and who has attached himself to a specific E.L.F. he calls Glow that he believes lives in the light-strip above his communal bunk. He leaves it small paper offerings — drawings, mostly — folded under the fixture every night. He is fiercely protective of two things: a palm-sized carved wooden animal his mother left in the housing block storage, and a seven-year-old girl named Polu in the adjacent bunk who cannot defend herself the way he has learned to.

| image prompt | GLMZ, portrait of Arden Salazar, a nine-year-old street kid with warm golden-brown skin reflecting mixed Hispanic/Latin American, South Asian, and Sub-Saharan African heritage. Lean, small-framed build, angular face with high sharp cheekbones and rounded lower face. Light gray eyes with dark brown iris rings, dark brown almost-black hair medium length and tousled. Visible scars and scrapes on forehead, chin, and knees from street living. Wearing oversized faded charcoal synthetic jacket with rolled cuffs over layered shirt, gray work-wear pants with grass stains, mismatched shoes held together with wire. Dirt-smudged skin, perpetually weathered expression. Hunched posture, constantly scanning eyes. Gritty Great Lakes Metropolitan Zone background with industrial Stockyard generators and warm amber-sodium lighting casting shadows. Unaugmented, completely chrome-free. Film grain and neo-noir color grading. --ar 2:3 --v 6 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
