Adaeze Calvillo-Dlamini
Adaeze Calvillo-Dlamini is a compact, unhurried man with deep brown skin going papery at the temples and a magnificent white moustache he waxes every morning without exception. His left arm from the elbow down is a thirty-year-old mechanical prosthetic he has never upgraded — brushed steel with visible articulation joints, which he keeps immaculate. He dresses in layers regardless of temperature: a canvas vest with dozens of pockets, a collared work shirt, fingerless gloves on the real hand. His stall on The Shelf sprawls across three connected spaces in a converted warehouse loading bay, stacked floor-to-ceiling with pre-Consolidation electronics, salvaged machine parts, cracked data-cores, antique physical media, pre-fab furniture missing crucial components, and objects whose original function has been entirely lost to time. He catalogues everything in a physical ledger written in a cramped three-language shorthand.

Adaeze Calvillo-Dlamini is a man in love with the material fact of things — their weight, their age, the way they were made. He genuinely does not think of himself as a dealer so much as a temporary custodian. He will tell you the history of an object for twenty minutes before he tells you the price, and the price will be either absurdly low because he likes you or absurdly high because he doesn't want to sell it. He is a poor businessman by most metrics and comfortable with this. He has strong opinions about everything and shares them with magnificent economy.

core fears
  • The past being irretrievably erased — no record, no object, no witness remaining
  • Dying before he has documented what he knows
core desires
  • To be the person who ensures nothing is entirely lost
  • A worthy inheritor for the collection and the knowledge inside it
coping mechanisms
  • Cataloguing as ritual
  • Retreating into the history of objects when human problems feel intractable
blind spots
  • So focused on preservation of the past that he sometimes misses urgent present-tense dangers
  • Tendency to trust people who show genuine curiosity, which has been exploited
secretHidden in a false-backed crate in the deepest part of the stall is a complete pre-Consolidation municipal archive — decades of city records, personal files, and classified infrastructure data from before the corponations restructured GLMZ's records. He found it in a demolition salvage job fifteen years ago and has never told anyone it exists. He is not sure what to do with it.
speech patterns
vocabularyPrecise and slightly archaic, with occasional Malian French from the Dembélé line. Uses technical terms for objects most people have no name for.
cadenceUnhurried to the point of being geological. Pauses are meaningful.
verbal tics
  • 'This is the thing about—'
  • Taps the prosthetic arm on objects he's describing
example lines
  • 'This is the thing about pre-Consolidation manufacture — they built it to last because they didn't control the replacement supply. Now it's all subscription. You understand the difference.'
  • 'I don't sell to people who don't ask what it is first. If you don't know what you're buying, you don't know what you're getting.'
  • 'She came to three different times wanting the same lamp. I didn't sell it to her. Told her to come back when she stopped needing it and just wanted it. That's the right relationship with objects.'

intimacy register
story hooks
  • The municipal archive hidden in his stall contains records that a corponation would pay — or kill — to retrieve or destroy. He doesn't know that anyone knows it exists, but something in the last month suggests someone is looking.
  • A teenager has been coming to his stall daily for weeks, clearly running from something, sleeping rough, and pretending to browse. He has been pretending not to notice and leaving food nearby. He needs someone to help figure out what the kid's situation actually is.
narrative functionTreasure-map NPC. Has access to rare pre-Consolidation objects that might be mission-critical MacGuffins, old data, or historically significant items. Exceptional source of information about GLMZ's history. Gives players reasons to dig through his stock — something is always in there.
augmentationsMechanical prosthetic arm (left, elbow-down, 30-year-old model, impeccably maintained). Reading enhancement monocle — not a true augment, a clip-on optical tool he has used for decades.
daily lifeOpens the stall late morning, spends several hours on acquisition runs through Ironvein's salvage channels, returns to sort and catalogue new items, and receives the steady trickle of regulars who come specifically to talk to him. Closes whenever he feels like it.
affiliationIndependent. Loose friendship network with other Shelf vendors. Known to the Oxidian Market Guild but not a member.

decision rules
  • Never sell to someone who doesn't know what they want it for
  • An object's history is part of its value — always disclose what you know
  • If something is irreplaceable, the price is not negotiable
escalation ladder
  • Polite historical digression that avoids the point
  • Direct statement of position
  • Refusal to continue conversation on topic
  • Physical removal of item from display
  • Calling on neighboring Shelf vendors
interpersonal modes
strangersWatchful and willing to lecture. Tests them with a historical question about something in plain sight.
friendsExpansive and occasionally confessional. Shares the objects he won't sell to anyone else.
stress responses
lowBegins unnecessary re-cataloguing
mediumGoes silent and works with the prosthetic arm more than the real one — an old tell
highClears the stall of customers without explanation and locks himself in with the archive
contradictions
  • Dedicated to preserving the historical record but actively concealing a crucial part of it
habits
  • Waxes the moustache every morning before opening
  • Gives every new acquisition a name before cataloguing it formally
  • Leaves a broken component — something broken beyond repair — as an offering at a small ELF shrine behind the counter
breaking points
  • Evidence that the archive has been discovered by someone dangerous
  • An object in his collection being deliberately destroyed in front of him

physical description
heritageA genetic confluence of the Ubiquitous Diaspora: 48.5% Hispanic/Latin American warmth forms the foundation, enriched by 30.8% Sub-Saharan African depth and resilience. Indigenous American ancestry (11.6%) contributes angular bone structure and facial geometry, while 7.3% North African heritage adds further refinement to cheekbones and brow. A trace of South Asian ancestry (1.8%) rounds the blend. The result is a face that synthesizes multiple continental traditions into a singular, weathered authenticity—warm medium-to-deep brown skin that speaks to equatorial and African ancestry, shaped by the angular geometries of Indigenous and North African lineages.
height cm168
weight kg72
buildCompact and wiry, shoulders still squared from decades of physical labor. No excess weight; muscle has transitioned to lean efficiency. Moves with the economy of someone who has carried heavy things for a lifetime.
hair colorWhite with faint traces of gray-black at the nape
hair styleCropped close to the scalp, well-maintained. Salt-and-pepper stubble on the jaw, kept to a consistent three-day length.
hair lengthShort
eye colorDeep brown, sharp and undiminished by age
skin toneWarm medium-to-deep brown with golden-amber undertones from Hispanic/Latin American and Sub-Saharan African heritage, slightly brightened by Indigenous American and North African admixture. Sun-weathered, papery texture developing at the temples and across the knuckles of the right hand.
complexionLean-faced with prominent cheekbones shaped by Indigenous American and North African ancestry. Deep laugh lines around the eyes. The magnificent white moustache is waxed daily with precision—it points slightly upward at the ends and is his single vanity. Skin still firm across the jawline; age shows primarily in the texture of his hands and the tiredness that occasionally settles behind his eyes. The warmth and depth of his complexion reflects his dominant Hispanic/Latin American and Sub-Saharan African heritage; angular facial structure and high cheekbone prominence speak to Indigenous American and North African contributions.
distinguishing marks
  • Faint burn scar across the back of his right hand, shaped like a partial arc—legacy of a molten salvage incident circa 2195.
  • A small rectangular tattoo on his inner left forearm (the flesh one), executed in black ink with what appears to be a technical diagram or circuit pattern—possibly a memorial or a reminder, never explained.
  • Fine white line scar running from his left temple down to the cheekbone, barely visible but present in certain light—origin unknown, not discussed.
visible augmentationsMechanical prosthetic left arm from the elbow down. Brushed steel construction with visible ball-joint articulation at the wrist and finger servos. Thirty years old and meticulous in maintenance—no rust, joints move with precision, minor wear marks visible on the palm contact surface. Reading enhancement monocle clipped to his left eye socket via a thin titanium arm that curves over the temple—a decades-old optical tool, not a true neural augment, made by a manufacturer that no longer exists.
posture movementMoves with unhurried deliberation. Never rushes. Uses his right hand naturally; the prosthetic left arm is gestural and precise—he has mastered it completely. Tends to stand with shoulders slightly forward, as if perpetually about to reach for something on a shelf. When seated, he becomes statuary—entirely still, watching. His gaze is patient and evaluative.
clothing styleTier 4 working-class practicality with personal ritual. Heavy canvas vest with dozens of pockets (each containing specific items organized by function), worn over a collared work shirt in muted colors (grays, dark blues, browns). The shirt is always buttoned; the vest is always layered on top regardless of ambient temperature—insulation and habit. Fingerless leather gloves on the right hand, worn thin at the knuckles. Canvas trousers, neutral color. Heavy boots, well-maintained but visibly aged. No jewelry except a faded wedding band on his right ring finger. His appearance suggests a man who dresses for function and ritual, not for impression.

Prominent angular cheekbones, lean face with deep laugh lines, sharp brown eyes. Cropped white hair with salt-and-pepper stubble. Magnificent precision-waxed white moustache curving upward. Visible burn scar on right hand, small circuit-pattern tattoo on left inner forearm, faint scar from left temple to cheekbone. Mechanical brushed steel prosthetic left arm with visible servos. Titanium reading monocle on left eye. Wearing heavy canvas work vest with multiple pockets over muted-colored collared shirt, fingerless leather gloves on right hand, canvas trousers, aged heavy boots. Wedding band on right ring finger. Posture slightly forward, patient evaluative gaze.
