The CR-2 is a flat, disc-shaped platform roughly 0.8 meters in diameter that lies flush against floors, roads, or any horizontal surface, using adaptive camouflage plating to match its surroundings visually. Six short, powerful legs are folded beneath the chassis in rest mode. When a target steps on or near the unit, it detonates upward — the legs launch the platform vertically with enough force to throw an adult human, while simultaneously deploying a ring of monofilament cutting edges around the disc perimeter. The effect is a combination of explosive force and lateral laceration delivered from directly underfoot.

Crucible designed the CR-2 as a mine replacement — cheaper to produce, recoverable if not triggered, and capable of repositioning itself if its location is compromised. Unlike traditional mines, the Trapdoor can be programmed with target discrimination parameters, theoretically reducing civilian casualties. In practice, the discrimination system is crude and relies on weight thresholds, meaning anyone over 45 kilograms is a valid target by default.

The most disturbing feature of the CR-2 is its ability to self-relocate after failed engagement attempts. If a target steps near but not on the unit, it can fold its legs, scuttle to a new position, and re-camouflage — meaning areas that have been swept for Trapdoors may not stay clear. Clearance teams report the psychologically exhausting experience of knowing the ground they just checked may have rearranged itself behind them.
