The TD-3 is a palm-sized quadrotor drone carrying a single shaped charge the size of a cigarette lighter. One TD-3 is a nuisance. One hundred TD-3s is a catastrophe. TESSERA sells them in crates of 200, and their tactical value exists entirely in numbers — a swarm of Hornets can saturate an area with individually targeted explosive strikes faster than any defense system can engage them all.

Each Hornet operates on a shared swarm intelligence protocol — units communicate position, target status, and threat data in real time, allowing the swarm to dynamically allocate attacks, avoid redundant targeting, and concentrate on high-value targets identified by the swarm consensus algorithm. A single operator can control an entire swarm through a tablet interface, designating zones and priority targets while the swarm handles individual engagement decisions.

The TD-3 is cheap enough to be disposable and effective enough to be terrifying. A single Hornet's shaped charge can penetrate light armor and kill an unprotected human. A swarm can overwhelm armored vehicles by targeting vision blocks, antenna arrays, and weapon systems simultaneously. The sound of 200 Hornets activating — a rising buzz that fills the air from every direction — has been described by survivors as the sound of the future coming to kill them.
