Ringo RK-2 'Stray'
The RK-2 doesn't explode and it doesn't burn. It walks through populated areas and disperses aerosolized chemical agents from vents along its spine — slowly, continuously, while moving at a pace indistinguishable from a real dog's walking gait. The RK-2 is designed not to be noticed. Its chassis is the most convincingly canine of any platform on the market, with synthetic fur covering, realistic ear and tail articulation, and a gait algorithm that perfectly mimics a mid-sized mixed-breed dog. It even pants.

The chemical payload varies by mission. Documented loads include incapacitating agents, tracking markers that adhere to skin and clothing, mood-altering pharmaceuticals, and agents that interfere with specific cyberware models. The dispersal rate is calibrated to be below visible threshold — no fog, no smell, no indication that anything is happening. Targets breathe the agent without knowing it. The RK-2 can cover an entire neighborhood in a single patrol loop.

Ringo markets the RK-2 for 'population management research' — a phrase that means whatever the buyer needs it to mean. The most chilling documented application involved RK-2 units dispersing a Lazarus-manufactured mood suppressant through a Shelf district in the weeks before a scheduled Ringo facility expansion that required resident displacement. By the time the eviction notices arrived, the population was too chemically docile to resist.

legalityDoes not officially exist
autonomy levelFully autonomous — patrol route programming
dimensions0.55m shoulder height, 0.9m length
weight22 kg (4L chemical payload)
power sourceLithium cell, 12-hour patrol endurance
locomotionQuadruped canine-mimetic with synthetic fur covering, realistic gait
armament
  • Spine-mounted aerosolized chemical dispersal vents
  • 4L interchangeable chemical payload
sensors
  • Crowd density monitoring
  • Wind direction for dispersal optimization
  • Chemical concentration feedback
countermeasuresIdentifying the RK-2 as non-biological is the primary challenge — close inspection reveals synthetic fur texture and mechanical gait artifacts. Gas masks protect against chemical agents. Air quality monitoring equipment can detect dispersal events after the fact.
known deployments
  • Officially none. Documented evidence of use in Shelf population management, mood suppression before corporate land seizures, and covert pharmaceutical trials on non-consenting populations
story hooks
  • A neighborhood in the Shelf has noticed that everyone feels unusually calm and agreeable lately. A player character with chemical detection augments identifies trace mood suppressants in the air. The source is a 'stray dog' that's been wandering the block for two weeks. People have been petting it.
  • Someone has loaded an RK-2 with a contagious pathogen instead of a chemical agent. The unit has been walking through the market district for three days. The pathogen's incubation period is ending.
cultural contextThe RK-2 represents the most insidious application of automata technology — a weapon that disguises itself as something people want to protect. In a city where real stray dogs are adopted and cared for by Shelf communities, the RK-2 exploits compassion as an attack vector.
