Lazarus NB-1 'Cradle Robber'
The NB-1 is a medical automaton designed for emergency neonatal extraction — removing newborns from dangerous environments when human medical personnel cannot safely access the location. The unit is small, wheeled, with articulated manipulator arms capable of the delicate handling required to safely secure and transport an infant. Its environmental protection capsule maintains temperature, oxygen, and humidity at neonatal ICU standards.

Lazarus designed the NB-1 for disaster response — extracting infants from collapsed buildings, evacuating neonatal wards during emergencies, and performing field deliveries in conditions where human OB/GYN personnel face unacceptable risk. The unit has saved lives. It is also one of the most nightmarish objects ever created, because its capabilities don't stop at emergency extraction.

The NB-1 can enter any environment an infant is in and leave with the infant inside its capsule. This includes homes, hospitals, shelters, and anywhere a newborn happens to be. Lazarus's medical authority contracts with GLMZ allow the NB-1 to be deployed for 'child welfare interventions' — a designation that covers everything from genuinely endangered infants to children seized from families who defaulted on medical debt incurred during birth. The machine that was designed to rescue babies is also the machine that takes them.

armament
  • None — medical platform. The horror is in the application, not the armament.
sensors
  • Neonatal vital sign monitoring
  • Environmental hazard detection
  • Navigation in damaged structures
countermeasuresPhysical obstruction of the unit's path. The manipulator arms are not designed for combat and can be blocked. Legal challenges to medical authority orders (slow, expensive, rarely successful). Community intervention — the NB-1 has been physically blocked by neighborhood residents in documented incidents.
known deployments
  • Emergency neonatal extraction (legitimate)
  • Child welfare interventions (contested)
  • Medical debt enforcement involving infant seizure (documented by civil rights organizations)
story hooks
  • An NB-1 is rolling through the Shelf toward a specific address. A Lazarus medical authority order authorizes the extraction of a three-week-old infant whose parents defaulted on birth-related medical debt. The neighborhood has been warned. They're building a barricade.
  • An NB-1 has taken an infant from a Shelf home under a medical authority order. The order was legitimate — the home was genuinely dangerous. But the infant is now in Lazarus custody, and the family can't afford the legal process to get their child back. Someone needs to navigate the system — or go around it.
cultural contextThe NB-1 is the automaton that makes parents in the Shelf afraid to go to hospitals. Every medical debt incurred during childbirth carries the implicit threat that a machine might come for the child. The fear suppresses medical care-seeking behavior, which increases infant mortality, which Lazarus uses as justification for expanded NB-1 deployment. The cycle is self-reinforcing.
