The TX-8 is a bipedal humanoid automaton standing 2.2 meters tall, built with deliberately exaggerated proportions — arms too long, legs too thin, a featureless head that turns to track movement with uncanny smoothness. It carries no weapons. Its only capability, beyond walking, is a suite of psychological disruption systems: subsonic emitters that induce anxiety and nausea, strobing visual patterns from its chest-mounted display that trigger disorientation, and a voice synthesizer that produces sounds specifically engineered to activate human fear responses — children crying, bones breaking, breath stopping.

The Scarecrow is a weapon of pure psychology. It walks into an area, stands there, and makes everyone within a hundred meters progressively more terrified until they leave. It does no physical harm. TESSERA's legal team has successfully argued in twelve separate hearings that the TX-8 is not a weapon because it causes no physical injury — a position that ignores the documented cases of cardiac events, panic-induced injuries during flight responses, and long-term PTSD among exposed populations.

The Scarecrow is deployed before other automata in suppression operations — it clears an area psychologically before physical force becomes necessary. TESSERA considers this humane. Everyone else considers the experience of being targeted by a TX-8 to be among the worst things that can happen to a person without leaving a mark.
