Lazarus BX-0 'Test Subject'
The BX-0 is not a product. It is a failed experiment that refuses to stop functioning. Lazarus's bioengineering division attempted to create a hybrid platform — mechanical chassis with biological tissue integration designed to give the automaton self-healing capability. The result was a quadruped platform roughly the size of a wolf, with a mechanical skeleton partially covered in lab-grown muscle tissue that contracts and relaxes in response to electrical stimulation from the internal control system. The biological tissue does regenerate, slowly, giving the BX-0 a limited ability to recover from damage that no purely mechanical platform possesses.

The failure is in the tissue's behavior. The lab-grown muscle responds to the control system's commands, but it also responds to stimuli the control system doesn't generate — it twitches, contracts asymmetrically, and occasionally drives the mechanical skeleton into movements that weren't commanded. The BX-0 stumbles, jerks, and lurches in ways that are profoundly disturbing to observe. It moves like something in pain, though it has no capacity for pain. The biological tissue occasionally grows in uncontrolled patterns, producing tumor-like masses that must be surgically removed before they interfere with joint articulation.

Lazarus has produced twelve BX-0 units, each slightly different as the bioengineering team iterates on the tissue integration process. None of them work correctly. None of them have been decommissioned. They are kept in a sealed laboratory section, powered and active, while researchers continue to study their failures. Lab personnel who work near the BX-0 containment area report persistent unease that they attribute to the sounds — the wet mechanical grinding of biological tissue being driven by electrical impulse against metal bone.
nameLazarus BX-0 'Test Subject'
classificationExperimental — Biomechanical Hybrid
aliases
  • Test Subject
  • The Mistake
  • Lab Rat
manufacturerLAZARUS PHARMACEUTICALS
tier availabilityN/A — experimental, not deployed
legalityExists in regulatory grey area — no classification for biomechanical hybrids
autonomy levelBasic autonomous locomotion with unpredictable biological interference
dimensions0.8m shoulder height, 1.4m length (varies by tissue growth)
weight55-70 kg (varies by tissue mass)
power sourceInternal lithium cell supplemented by biological metabolic processes (minimal)
locomotionQuadruped mechanical with biological muscle tissue overlay — unpredictable gait
armament
  • None standard — mechanical jaw with biological tissue reinforcement capable of 800N bite force
sensors
  • Basic optical
  • Biological olfactory tissue (experimental, unreliable)
countermeasuresBiological tissue is vulnerable to fire, chemical agents, and conventional weapons. Mechanical skeleton requires anti-materiel approaches. The combination means no single countermeasure addresses both components effectively.
known deployments
  • None — laboratory containment only
story hooks
  • One of the twelve BX-0 units has escaped Lazarus containment. It's in the Shelf, and it's doing something none of the others have done: it's hunting. Not because it was programmed to. Because the biological tissue is driving behavior the mechanical system can't override.
  • A Lazarus researcher wants to leak data proving that the BX-0 program has produced units with rudimentary biological nervous systems — meaning they might actually feel pain. The units have been kept active and operational for two years. If they can feel, what has been done to them constitutes something unprecedented.
cultural contextThe BX-0 exists at the intersection of every fear about automata and biotechnology. It is not alive, but it is not entirely dead. It is not sentient, but its biological components introduce an element of unpredictability that feels like will. It represents a line that most people didn't know could be crossed.
