Hearthstone DL-5 'Longshoreman'
The DL-5 is a heavy-lift cargo handling automaton — a bipedal platform standing 3.0 meters with oversized arms and reinforced grip mechanisms designed for loading and unloading shipping containers, palletized cargo, and industrial equipment at port facilities, rail yards, and distribution centers. It can lift 5,000 kilograms unassisted and manipulate loads with a precision that belies its size — placing a multi-ton container with centimeter-level accuracy onto a transport vehicle.

Hearthstone's entry into industrial automation was unexpected — the company built its reputation on consumer domestic products. The DL-5 represents a deliberate expansion into heavy industry, and Hearthstone applied its consumer-product philosophy to the design: it should be simple, reliable, and require minimal expertise to operate. The DL-5's interface is a tablet application. Load locations are tapped on a digital map. The unit does the rest. A single supervisor manages up to eight DL-5 units simultaneously, a ratio that would have required forty human dockworkers.

The DL-5 has become the standard cargo handling platform at GLMZ's shipping terminals, displacing both human labor and the previous generation of crane-based systems. Its bipedal design allows it to navigate the irregular terrain of working docks — stepping over cables, climbing ramps, crossing between vessel decks — in ways that fixed or wheeled systems cannot. Workers at the docks call them 'longshoremen' without irony, because the machines now do the job that earned the name.

tier availabilityTier 2
legalityCommercial — heavy industrial automation license
autonomy levelTask autonomous — tablet-directed with obstacle avoidance
dimensions3.0m height, 1.5m shoulder width
weight1,800 kg
power sourceHydrogen fuel cell, 20-hour shift endurance
locomotionBipedal, heavy-duty, all-terrain dock rated
sensors
  • Load weight and balance assessment
  • Spatial positioning (centimeter accuracy)
  • Obstacle detection
  • Structural stress monitoring in grip mechanisms
countermeasuresThe unit is large and visible — no concealment is possible. Its tablet control system can be disrupted by signal jamming. The grip mechanisms are powerful but slow to close — they will not catch a person who moves away promptly.
known deployments
  • Shipping terminals, rail yards, and heavy industrial distribution centers across GLMZ
story hooks
  • A DL-5 at a shipping terminal has been loading specific containers onto specific vehicles without instructions from any supervisor. Its tablet interface shows no commands. Someone is issuing orders through a secondary communication channel that bypasses the management system.
  • A DL-5 picked up a container that was listed as empty. Its load sensors registered 4,200 kilograms. The container was placed on a transport that left the terminal before anyone could investigate. Whatever was inside, it was heavy, undeclared, and someone wanted it moved without inspection.
cultural contextThe DL-5 ended the longshoreman as a profession in GLMZ. The docks — once one of the last bastions of organized physical labor, with union traditions stretching back centuries — are now operated by machines supervised by a handful of technicians. The old union hall still stands at the waterfront. It is a bar now.
