Hearthstone's entry into industrial automation was unexpected — the company built its reputation on consumer domestic products. The DL-5 represents a deliberate expansion into heavy industry, and Hearthstone applied its consumer-product philosophy to the design: it should be simple, reliable, and require minimal expertise to operate. The DL-5's interface is a tablet application. Load locations are tapped on a digital map. The unit does the rest. A single supervisor manages up to eight DL-5 units simultaneously, a ratio that would have required forty human dockworkers.

The DL-5 has become the standard cargo handling platform at GLMZ's shipping terminals, displacing both human labor and the previous generation of crane-based systems.
