The FF-9 is a firefighting automaton — a heavy quadruped platform standing 1.8 meters at the shoulder, clad in heat-resistant ceramic composite rated for sustained exposure to 1,200°C. It walks into burning buildings. That is its primary function and its primary advantage: it goes where human firefighters cannot survive, navigating through fully involved structural fires to locate trapped occupants, assess structural integrity, and suppress fires from the inside using high-pressure water jets fed through a trailing fire hose or an onboard compressed foam system.

The FF-9's thermal protection allows it to operate in conditions that would kill an unprotected human in seconds. It walks through rooms engulfed in flame, pushes through collapsed burning debris, and stands in direct contact with fire while scanning for human vital signs through walls of flame and smoke. Its sensor suite can detect a heartbeat through three meters of burning rubble. When it finds someone, it signals their location to external rescue teams and, if the structural assessment permits, attempts extraction using padded manipulator arms designed to carry an unconscious human without causing additional injury.

Arcturus donated the first generation of FF-9 units to GLMZ's fire service — one of the rare acts of corporate generosity that was genuinely altruistic, or at least genuinely good marketing. The city now operates 200 FF-9 units, and firefighter fatalities have dropped to near zero. The machines walk into the fire. The humans wait outside. The building burns around a mechanical quadruped that does not feel pain, does not feel fear, and will keep searching for survivors until its battery dies or the building collapses on top of it.
