The UP-2 is a utility maintenance automaton — a compact cylindrical platform 0.8 meters in diameter designed to traverse sewer lines, water mains, and drainage systems, performing inspection and repair tasks in spaces too confined, too hazardous, or too disgusting for human workers. It moves through pipes on a set of radial rubber treads that grip interior surfaces, propelling itself against water flow and through partially obstructed passages. Its tool head carries a rotating array of cutters, sealants, cameras, and sample collectors.

The UP-2 is one of Arcturus's few products that does not have a military heritage — it is a genuinely civilian utility machine, designed because GLMZ's underground infrastructure is a labyrinth of aging pipes that requires constant maintenance. Human utility workers once performed this work. The mortality rate was unacceptable — toxic gas exposure, drowning in flash floods, structural collapse in deteriorating tunnel sections. The UP-2 replaced them because machines can work in sewage and die without anyone having to write a condolence letter.

Arcturus maintains a fleet of 600 UP-2 units under contract with GLMZ's water authority, performing continuous inspection and repair across the city's 12,000 kilometers of underground piping. The units operate autonomously, navigating by inertial guidance and pipe-system mapping, surfacing at access points to upload data and receive new assignments. They are down there now — hundreds of them, crawling through the pipes beneath every district, every building, every street. The infrastructure works because the machines keep it working.
