It has no face because TESSERA's design team determined that a face creates expectations of personality. The PA-5 is a tool, and it looks like one. It follows its owner at a precise 1.5-meter distance, carrying items, recording meetings, managing schedules, placing calls, and providing real-time information retrieval on demand through its integrated network connection.

The PA-5 processes natural language and responds in a flat, neutral voice that conveys information without inflection. It does not greet people. It does not say please or thank you. It does not have opinions. When asked a question it cannot answer, it states 'I do not have that information' and waits. TESSERA deliberately stripped every social nicety from the PA-5's interaction model because they wanted a machine that communicates pure data without the overhead of simulated personality.

In practice, the PA-5 is deeply unsettling to people who encounter one for the first time. The featureless head that tracks speakers, the silent following behavior, the flat voice emerging from nothing — it reads as surveillance, not assistance. Which, of course, it is. The PA-5 records everything within a five-meter radius on a rolling 30-day buffer. TESSERA's terms of service grant the owner access to all recordings.
