Drexel Armory Conceal-Plate Field Jacket
From the outside, this looks like a well-made M65-style field jacket — olive drab or coyote tan, cotton-nylon ripstop, four cargo pockets, a hood that stows in the collar. It is not. The Drexel Armory Conceal-Plate is built around a removable ballistic insert system: soft-armor panels in the chest, back, and flanks rated for standard small-arms at close range, with rigid plate pockets that accept Drexel or third-party hard inserts. The armor adds less than a centimeter of profile and is undetectable to casual inspection. The jacket passes metal scanners unless the hard plates are installed.

Drexel Armory sells to licensed private security, bounty contractors, and Tier 3 civilians with the right permits. The jacket is also a staple of the unlicensed self-defense community, where it circulates without plates and with the insert pockets quietly removed or disguised. The ripstop is tough enough to take repeated washing, and the cut is practical rather than tactical-aesthetic — it does not scream armor.

story hooks
  • A character takes a round and survives because of plates they almost left home — the plates now have a bullet deformed against them, which they keep
  • A shipment of Drexel field jackets arrived in the Shelf with the plate pockets already loaded — no one knows who sent them or why
  • The jacket's ripstop pattern is identical to a discontinued military surplus design; someone with the right contacts might recognize the lineage

physical description
visual profileA deceptively utilitarian M65-style field jacket with classic military proportions — straight-cut, hip-length, substantial presence without aggressive styling. At first glance, indistinguishable from vintage surplus or working-class outerwear. The silhouette reads 'practical' rather than 'armed,' which is entirely intentional.
fitRelaxed, slightly oversized through the shoulders and torso to accommodate concealed armor without binding. Articulated sleeve construction allows natural arm movement. Cut long enough to cover the hip line where plate pockets sit.
primary materialCotton-nylon ripstop blend — the same weave used in genuine military field gear. Tight weave prevents snagging and distributes impact load across fabric.
textureCrisp, slightly stiff ripstop texture visible up close; the signature raised grid pattern characteristic of ripstop weave. Seams reinforced with heavy bar-tacks at stress points. Soft interior lining (synthetic blend) for comfort over armor inserts.
color schemeAvailable in olive drab or coyote tan — both weathered, desaturated military tones. No logos or visible branding; identification marks are subtle interior stamps only.
closuresHeavy-duty brass zippers down the front (primary) and side vents; magnetic snaps on the chest and cargo pockets for quick access; friction-fit strap closures on wrist cuffs.
distinctive features
  • Stowaway hood nested in the collar — compact and unobtrusive
  • Four cargo pockets with reinforced stitching and magnetic closures
  • Removable soft-armor panel system invisibly integrated into jacket construction
  • Rigid plate pocket placement disguised as standard interior padding
  • No visible attachment points or tactical webbing that would suggest armor
  • Reinforced lateral seams accommodate hidden insert pockets
  • Interior label marked only with serial number — no brand visibility
tier indicatorTier 2–3 boundary: expensive enough to signal serious self-preservation, functional enough to avoid corporate ostentation. Licensed versions skew Tier 2 corporate security; unlicensed street versions are Tier 3–4.
cultural contextSignals: cautious professional, private security contractor, or careful urban dweller with means. Worn by bounty contractors, licensed bodyguards, and civilians who've decided the city demands armor. The non-tactical cut suggests someone who does not want to advertise preparedness — a practical measure, not a statement.
condition typicalTypically worn broken-in but maintained. Ripstop ages slowly and develops subtle creasing at flex points. Unlicensed versions may show careful wear or modification (removed insignia, stitching evidence of pocket alteration). Licensed security versions tend to be kept clean and uniform.
image promptA Drexel Armory Conceal-Plate Field Jacket displayed on a dark mannequin or worn by a mixed-heritage neo-noir model with visible forearm augmentation. Olive drab ripstop fabric catches cool blue-tinted industrial lighting. Shot against a backdrop of corrugated steel or warehouse concrete, moody and utilitarian. Close detail shows the stowed hood and cargo pocket stitching. The overall mood is professional restraint — gear that works, not gear that performs. Cinematic urban security aesthetic. --ar 2:3 --v 6
