The round is magnetically accelerated to moderate velocity and shatters on impact, releasing its payload as a fine aerosol that penetrates clothing and skin to reach the synovial fluid in the target's joints.

The crystallization compound is a proprietary Tessera Corponation formulation that remains in supersaturated solution until exposed to the specific chemical environment of human synovial fluid, at which point it rapidly precipitates into jagged crystalline structures within the joint capsule. The onset is delayed — 60-90 seconds — which means the target initially appears unaffected, a property that makes the weapon ideal for covert incapacitation in situations where immediate visible effects would compromise the operator.

The rifle carries 8 rounds in a linear magazine, with each round individually sealed against moisture contamination. The crystallization compound is extremely hygroscopic and will precipitate prematurely if exposed to atmospheric moisture, rendering the round useless. This sensitivity limits the weapon's operational viability in humid environments and requires operators to store ammunition in desiccated containers.
